Unemployment Extension:Reid Backs Up-And The Rest Are Fickle

On Tuesday the Senate had a very confusing day if you are watching the progress of HB 4213. After filing for cloture on Monday to push the voting up, Senator Reid has withdrawn his filing. It seems that Democrats are having second thoughts on the deficit spending of this bill, and Mr. Hatch wants to add a drug testing policy to the bill that would require recipients of welfare or the unemployment extension to pass a drug test to continue receiving benefits.

Reid Withdraws Cloture

Senator Reid has withdrawn the cloture he filed for an unknown reason. This will set the stage for a vote possibly today or tomorrow on this bill. He may have withdrawn because the votes needed aren’t there yet. A vote is scheduled on the bill for 10:45 A.M. today, if this fails though, there is still hope. They will vote on an alternative amendment that was proposed by Senator Thune that has the measure paid for by unused stimulus dollars.

Democrats Having Second Thoughts

Meanwhile the Democrats are just now starting to complain about the deficit spending on this bill. Senator Barry Nelson expressed his concerns “Borrowing and deficit spending at the point of a crisis is one thing, but when you’re in recovery, borrowing and deficit spending is another thing, borrowing during a recovery is risky because it may slow down the recovery.” It seems that a few of their party are starting to share his concern.

Adding A Drug Testing Requirement

Senator Orrin Hatch proposed to add a testing policy to the bill that requires all recipients of state welfare or unemployment insurance benefits to pass a mandatory drug test before being eligible. He said “Drugs are a scourge on our society — hurting children, families and communities alike, this amendment is a way to help people get off of drugs to become productive and healthy members of society, while ensuring that valuable taxpayer dollars aren’t wasted.” This amendment isn’t expected to pass into law though.

I am a registered Democrat in the state of Nevada. I have called and e-mailed Senator Reid’s office only to be ignored! My unemployment has run out and I have no intention of re-electing Senator Reid unless he starts thinking about the more than 14% of the Nevada residents currently unemployed! I want to a job! I want to work! I want a life!!!

I am in Chicago and this is ridiculous….i lost my job january 2009……i have looked everywhere for a job…..today i interviewed for a position that paid $10.00 per hour for only 12 hours a week…..how in the hell am i supposed to live off that….but if thats all i can get i will take it……

Congress needs to go on unemployment so they can know what it feels like to not have any money…..

it still seems so surreal to me that something like this has happened in the united states….i went from having a good paying job which i thought was stable…..and then boom im on unemployment…….

“sad and sick” i hear that, i too have been laid off since jan 09. we didn’t choose to be laid off only to get unemployment, but we earned that right and aren’t getting it. wall st deliberately defrauded millions and deserve nothing, but ARE getting it.

but that’s not to say we aren’t getting it, we just have a hard time sitting ndown now. lol

–try it on $200/wk then on $86.00/wk– then on ‘nothing’. This doesn’t cover my rent, much less ‘drugs. If I could afford drugs, my blood pressure wouldn’t be 212/116.

ps.Thanks for putting oil in my backyard, bp. adding insult to injury. you taking lessons from our senate?

  7. Ex Business Exec says:

Hatch wants blanket drug screens? Fine. AFTER HIS STATE pays the almost $500 MILLION that this will cost, I want him to take one too, outlining for public embarrassment all of the medications HE takes, likely including VIAGRA.
Typical Republican bullshit, I don’t know why anyone votes for these rich elitist pigs.

Benjamin Cardin of md, needs to stick to the imporatnce of what is needed. Sounds like our senate is more conncerned with who is going to be the next judge instead of the american people,. I guess playing with ameircan lives is a joke to our goverment. They have proved it more and more each day they ignore the american people. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy, playing with so called loop holes, funding another war is far more important. When does enough mean enough. Do these people realize that unemployment is our money!, We paid in to that each one of us from the very first job we work, yet we are only allowed to go back 18 months of employment. I have been working since i was 15, I have been laid off for a year and a half now and like so many the goverment cutt me off. I have worked over 17 yrs of my life and only allowed 18 months back. Well my question is wheres all my money since i was 15? What did the govermnet do with it? Oh the senate went on a ten day vaction with some of it and said screw america. Why are the news companies not covering this, but they can cover the weather? Enough is enough. Now this ass Sheldon whitehouse isnt no better,, talking about something about paying alaska back, give me a break what abou paying the american people what is rightfully ours. Another jack ass ignoring what is important, Making my list checking it twice fire each jerk that repeatdly slaps us in the face. What is wrong with the assholes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why are they not being fired
why do they get to play ches with our life
why the hell doesnt obama do his flippin job oh wait let me guess he’s getting cut backs and tax breaks to right? America is gone to hell

where is my unemployment money????? its not like it isn’t mine I worked 44 yrs and paid into this and social security but congress and others in washington dc want to dictate when and how I get my own money. this is totally rediculous if they wanted to spend 20 trillion on a pet project they would come up with the money
