Unemployment Extension: Not An Emergency According To LeMieux

By Phillip Williams on May 7, 2010, 9:48 am Posted in Finance News

Earlier this week Senator LeMieux made an statement on the floor in a continuing attempt by Republicans to block any type of unemployment benefits extension measures getting passed. Some Democrats are still on the fence over this even though they should be supporting it whole-heartedly.

What LeMieux Had To Say

The Senator laid out the definition of “Emergency” according to the Budget Act of 1974 that Congressional leaders are restrained by, saying “an emergency is necessary, or vital, sudden, quick coming to being, and not building up over time, urgent, pressing, compelling, unforeseen, unpredictable, not permanent, temporary in nature. None of those requirements are met by the attempt to waive the pay as you go requirements.” He also gave the Webster dictionary definition as “an unforeseen set of circumstances resolving in a state that calls for immediate action.” The Budget Act he referred to requires that any money Congress spends must be covered in the budget, or be an “emergency.”

“You’re Either Fer Us Or Agin Us”

Although there is some support from the Democrats in the Senate, not all are completely on board. Senator Baucus (D-MT) said that the extensions in place presently should be sufficient, but there has been rumors that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may be on the fence, and that Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office has released positive words o this issue. Substantial statements haven’t been made so far except in the case of Sen. Schumer who said he completely supports a Tier V extension.

Since over 20% of the workforce is underemployed, a lot is missed with just the 9.7% unemployment, including those that won’t be counted when their benefits run out. So these are a few of the Senators that need to know about your personal “non-emergency.”

So Senator LeMieux thinks that all the people who are unemployed & us 99′rs who are running out of time is not an emergency??? I have been looking for a job for almost 2 years & nothing!!!! I’m am not lazy & I would give anything to be working right NOW!!!!! My 86 year old Mother lives with me & soon I will have no way to pay my bills. The little bit (& I mean a little)she gets from SS is not enough to get by. How you would like it LeMieux if it was you & your Mother??? Why don’t all politicans take some of their money out of their BIG pockets & give it to the PEOPLE!!!! Come Nov. you will find out how we feel!!! Pass the Tier V NOW so we can live!

  2. raymond lansberry says:

Clean tech has seen a boost as the U.S. pours government funding into renewable energy, and China looks set to reap much of the benefits. Latest example: a Chinese wind-turbine company has just become the exclusive supplier for one of the largest wind-farm developments in the U.S.

The Shenyang Power Group has signed on to supply 240 of its massive 2.5-megawatt wind turbines to a 36,000-acre development in West Texas. The Wall Street Journal reports that the wind farm is also slated to receive $1.5 billion in financing from the Export-Import Bank of China.

  6. JimH says:

Here’s the two options, Sen LeMieux – you decide which this is:

    1) It’s an unseen set of circumstances that require immediate attention (aka “emergency”), or

    2) It was planned all along, therefore no further action is necessary.

LeMieux is a waste of carbon. He is simply Charlie Crists personal lame duck hand puppet. He has nothing to loose by running his manure spewing mouth. He was placed in the senate by his good old buddy “The Tan Tuna” just to fill the void till “Tuna Boy”could(in his dreams)take over the senate seat later this year. LeMieux is nothing but a repug tool. REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER.

Not an emergency? It is a big time emergency since they bailed out the crooks who cost us our jobs! I worked for one of those big money companies and after more than 4 years was kicked to the curb while they made big bonuses! I will be voting Libertarian or any other party in November. HOW ABOUT YOU?

  13. Shay says:

Mr. President, we need HELP NOW! Americans need emmergency assistance, We are demanding that you address the need for reform and cooperation amongst the financial institutions and the American people. Since the mortgagee prevention plan went into affect foreclosures have increased and its do to the lenders’ unwillingness to modify and accept request for existing mortgage modification. Instead of working to reduce the number of foreclosure across the U.S., financial institutions are humiliating, and frustrating clients with dozens of forms, rude comments, not returning their phone calls, and offering no relief or assistants to come to a common solution. Institutions are playing a revolving door game with people’s lives, after receiving bailout money and actively playing a role in the financial crisis in the U.S. How is it that they are allowed to continuously victimize the American people? We have and are at war against Country’s who threaten the survival of America. What is the difference between these institutions? We need your assistance in dealing with the financial institutions that are threatening the survival of many Americans. At the end job-loss=foreclosure=starvation= disaster, a Country filled with crime and lawless. I am begging you and members of Congress to demand these individuals and corporations be held accountable. There are many Americans going through the same situation and there is no help from these giants. God Help us for what will come.

A modification benefits anyone whom is faced with minimum income. Why not give the American people a chance, please humanize with us, we are loosing our homes and there has been no justice for the American people, unemployment continues to rise and corporations continue to outsource and exploit for cheat labor. Veterans fight for our country to return home to no jobs and their families’ throne on the streets. Families take thousands in student loans for college degrees to enter a society where there are no jobs. At the rate and greed of corporate America I fear for this Country, I fear the crime, and devastation many cities and states will not recover from. Mr. President, American people dye fighting large corporations, and government, everyday on an individual situation, where is the clause for a massive destruction that forces this Country to come together and make people accountable for doing the right thing.

The facts are the modification benefits will work if given the opportunity, for many Americans. The financial institutions are protected, any default on from the client, allows the agreement to be rescinded. Why can’t I an American have this opportunity? I met the requirements according to the timing and rollout of the program. Are you telling me it’s better to foreclose and through me in the streets after years of loyal business. It is better to place and abandon home in my neighborhood? Is it better than trying to workout a resolution that benefits all parties involved?

I thank you for your time and apologize for the extensive letter, please let me know if there is anything I can do to save my home and community.

Respectfully, and honored having you, serve our Country.

  15. Pete Benac says:

This just re-enforces my opinion that come November ANY ONE with the word incumbent in their status should be voted out. Not that the rich fat boys will feel the pinch of unemployment

Congress (House and Senate) is no longer looking after the their constituents. It’s all a jockey to see who looks better.

    Frankly neither party looks good..

  16. John A says:

I think politicians are playing with our lives to see how the public will vote come November. If the unemployed don’t raise the issue of needing additional weeks of UI benefits, they will gladly forget about us. After all, they only care about their own skins. Keep hounding our elected officials or we won’t get any additional benefits.

  17. alex says:

WE WILL NOT FORGET!! Next election – let Congress feel the sting of the unemployment lines!!! – How many years have you paid taxes? 30? 40? Your government bails out bankers and Wallstreet execs using your tax dollars – but unemployment is allowed to expire? Congress wasn’t worried about the deficit when that big insurance company and Wall Street execs were giving themselves bonuses with taxpayer money! What happened to “by the people” or “for the people”? Or are the big campaign contributors the only “people” who count to congress? They are playing games and going on vacation while you are wondering how to feed your kids? 10% unemployment carries 10% of the vote! Use it!!

  18. Ryan, FL says:

I am an ex-resident of Michigan who moved to Florida four years ago to seek better opportunities. I moved because Michigan was beginning to implode, jobs were scarce, and I was not willing to go down with the ship. Four years later I am unemployed, broke, and on another sinking ship. I have been searching for employment for 15 months and applied for jobs that I would have never considered in the past. I have exhausted all possibilities and continue to everyday.

Why is it, the leaders of this country can make split-second decisions and provide foreign aid to other countries, but they cannot focus on the right decisions and take care of the Americans who make this country great?

  19. KColumbo says:

Ahem – scuse me, the unemployment rate is truly much higher than reported today in the latest economic propaganda spin which is so obviously strategic to infuse false psychological optimism in a continuing stagnant situation….
The many many long term unemployed who have exhausted all UE insurance benefits and are left floundering with no income and NO JOBS – these people are not represented in the unemployment figure because they have dropped off the unemployment reporting rolls. I cannot even believe the audacity and arrogance of our government to spew such false propoganda. Everyone be afraid, be very afraid of what is happening in this country…..

  20. GAlteriso says:

Been out of work and will exhuast my 99 weeks this week. My job required operating complex engineering 3D software which was not user friendly. The companies who will eventually hire these types of people back will have to deal with retraining them and are reluctant to do so. So the chances of me getting a position have deteriated even more so. Pass tier V and help us out.

Yeah it’s not an Emergency to Lemiux. I emailed him and let him know that i bet ( monopoly money )that it will be when i am homeless and pitching a tent on his front lawn.

  24. tom says:

Lemiux is another rich guy who’s never had to get his hands dirty or actually *work* for a living (silver spoon baby). I’ve been in the construction business since I got out of the Navy in 1970. I’ve always been able to find work when the jobs were completed. Well, I got laid off in November of 2007 and have yet to be able to find another job!! Where’s all the jobs the president promised??? They’re spending our tax dollars like there’s no tomorrow but I still see no jobs… unemployment is back up to 9.9% (probably more like 17%). It doesn’t look good for us looking-for-work folks any time soon!

  25. john says:

just file bankrupty and apply for welfare there are no jobs and congress doe not care

  26. michelle says:

Benefits need to be extended until at least the end of the year. The government can’t seem to find funding for this? Just what are they planning to do with the millions of people who are going to run out of benefits soon? They will have to find funding to feed them all, otherwise there is going to be a very big problem. Oh yeah, everyone can just be switched from unemployment to welfare. Right, like thats ever going to happen.

  27. Shawn/Ca says:

What get’s me is that the goverment is spending money in other places that appear to be more important than the unemployed American citizen. I guess bailing out big banks and exploring outer space is more important than the American citizen that needs the help of another unemployment extension. Are you serious? I may not be a politician[thank God] but come on Senators get a clue. I would pay one unemployment check to see them be in our shoes for just a couple weeks. Where is the empathy? God bless the unemployed. Keep your head guy’s.

  28. Angela says:

I sent this letter to the media, congress, and the white house. This governement should be ashamed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not quite sure the impact that not receiving anymore unemployment benefits (I am a 99er as we are now called) is fully understood.

Let me share with you the position that I am now in since my benefits have ended. I am 2 months behind on my mortgage payments, electricity payments, cable payments and car payments. I receive daily calls along with letters of threats to foreclose on my home, reposes my car, and cut off my cable and electric. We pay 900.00 a month in medical insurance as my husbands employer does not contribute plus 135.00 for my daughter. I will be canceling our health insurance and pray that we do not get sick. I have high blood pressure and have to take 4 medications daily to keep it under control; this alone is 200.00 a month. This is medication I cannot go without.

There are no savings whatsoever as that had to be used during the “gaps” of unemployment. I have been unemployed for over 2 years now. I have sent over 600 resumes. I was working at WAMU as an administrative assistant for the mortgage bond traders and was told of my layoff the day I returned back to work from maternity leave.

I have sold whatever jewelry I had. I have no one to borrow from. My mom who is receiving SS widow benefits helps me with baby food and milk and diapers at times when she can. Not only can I not find a job, my husband has been looking for a second job and no luck there either. He works in the restaurant industry and during a recession people do not eat out understandably.

I had to count change this morning, pennies to buy ½ a gallon of milk for my daughter. I have never felt so humiliated and so insignificant in my life. I have worked since I am 17 years old. I have paid my taxes. There have been times I held 2 jobs. So this misconception of the people getting unemployment benefits are lazy is so WRONG. I know that who ever need help when I was working received the help from taxes I paid. I am fine with that. There is not an ounce of help available for me out there. So here I am waiting to lose it all. How is it that we help everyone else and not our own? This is a very serious matter affect the lives of so many Americans and many more to come as their benefits end. I beg of you do not let me lose my home. I need to feed my child, have electric. The car is what I am using to try and get a job.

We need a Tier V. Please do not ignore us or forget us. The situation I am in is becoming dire. I do not sleep, I am having anxiety attacks, and to have to ask my mom, a widow for baby food, this should not be happening in this country.

We bailed out the car industry, the banks, and now how about the people.

P.S. I had to sell my high school ring and a few pairs of earrings this morning to buy diapers, milk, and baby food. Talk about wanting to crawl into a hole!!!

  29. Angela says:

Sorry for that long post folks!!!! I am really tired of the ingnorance and being ingnored as they watch our lives just fall apart!!!!

  30. Angela says:

Also, this morning on the news….they staed that 210,000 jobs were added yet the unemployment rate went UP to 9.9%. Ok can they do math??? How is this getting better!!!

  31. Regina Alexander says:

Come on this guy is an asshole and out of touch with reality, don’t waste your time.

  32. Ashado says:

Where are all of these jobs? I’d sure like to know. What I do know is that there are thousands upon thousands of unemployed in America who have exhausted their unemployment. The vast majority of these people are middle age men and women, dads and moms, who have worked their entire life only to be laid off due to no fault of their own. Now they go without. Yet today I heard a rumor that the United States might help bail out Greece. Another kick in the teeth to the unemployed in our own country. The United States is always one of the first to send money to countries who have had the misfortune of natural disasters; and now the down fall of the Greek economy. While the unemployed American’s barely get noticed at all. DONT YOU THINK IT IS HIGH TIME OUR GOVERNMENT HELP OUR OWN AMERICAN PEOPLE? DONT SEND A DIME TO ANOTHER COUNTRY WHEN THERE ARE PEOPLE RIGHT HERE AT HOME WHO ARE SUFFERING AND BEING IGNORED. HOW DARE YOU!!! A lot of us can’t wait until elections roll around again, we may be unemployed but we still vote. MAYBE THEN YOU’LL HEAR THE VOICES OF AMERICA’S UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE.

And meanwhile, we continue to allow jobs to leave this country. Calling it ‘free enterprise’.

I withdrew my money from the paypal account this afternoon and later chcked to see if it had made it into the Wells Fargo account when I logged back in there were another $105 in overdraft charges. For two solid hours I bitched and yelled and swore, until my voice was gone. Do you think Wells Fargo did anything… of course not, I was hung up on at least 5 times oh and the real kicker in another Wells Fargo account I had $620. I told them that i was unemployed that doing this to me was like putting a gun to my head…. they could give a rats ass…@$210 in less than 12hrs and not 1 person who works at Wells Fargo had to move a muscle! That’s what this country has become the rich get richer, like I told them if i had a million dollars i would never get charged for anything but instead you pricks take from the little guy who can least afford it! Senator FAT AND HAPPY should rot in hell.

  47. Janada says:

We should email, fax, and tweet every Senator and Representative at the state and federal levels. Even though they can’t respond to constituents outside of their respective districts, we can get our point across that we are hurting and we need help Now! We need to impress upon Congress that we know they will break for summer recess around the end of June and that this issue is far too important to be placed on the back burner while Congress takes its summer break.

FAX, EMAIL, AND CREATE AN ACCOUNT ON TWITTER AND START TWEETING.

I sent tweets for the better part of yesterday, plan on doing so again today, and will continue to do so until we hear something. We have to make ourselves and our struggle an oppressive presence in the working lives of OUR government officials, because at the end of the day, they work for and were elected to, REPRESENT US! Let’s remind them of this.

  48. Ashado says:

I am so sick and tired of them snowballing us and telling us that there are jobs out there. Where are all of these jobs they are talking about? Here is a quote from an article you don’t hear much about. After reading this you will see that April’s unemployment rate actually inched up some, not down. They can fudge numbers any way they want to make it look to their favor. This Administration and Government wants the American people to believe they are creating jobs; when in fact we the unemployed know that is not the case. Here is the quote from the article I found:

“The national unemployment rate edged up again in April according to numbers reported on Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The nationwide rate was 9.9%”.
“Non farm payroll employment rose by 290,000 in April.  The good news is employment increased in areas like manufacturing that have been hard hit by this recession. However a large part of the increase came from government hiring for the Census. The unemployment rate has increased because more job seekers have resumed looking for work as the economy has improved. The real unemployment rate is still very high at 17.1% The real unemployment rate includes people who have given up looking for work or those employed part time that would like full time work.  The number of Americans out of work six months or longer rose to 6.7 million.”
Now our Administration and Government is once again going to slap the long-term unemployed in the face by sending financial support to Greece to help “bail” them out. What about helping out the American’s who are suffering in our country????
Here is the address to a petition just started today by Issa Decker, who authored the original 99ers petition.
