Unemployment Extension: Lame Ducks fight for Unemployment Extensions

By William Finch on November 30, 2010, 11:44 am Posted in Finance News

As the lame congress reconvened yesterday Democrats hoped Republicans would be more reasonable about unemployment extensions. The parties polarized yet again on Tuesday, at the expense of common sense or even common decency, when Republicans again stubbornly refused to pass the bill for unemployment insurance extensions. The price tag for these extensions is only $12.5 billion a tiny amount for the US government, yet it seems a matter of principle for both parties. Democrats can only hope that Republicans co-operate.

Job Creation Failing

There are no jobs, due to the failed policies of the Bush administration which took scores of millions of good paying industrial jobs out of the country, and gave them to workers in dozens of third world countries. Corporations were encouraged with tax breaks to do this, against the best interest of America. There were millions of jobs lost during the Bush Administration and seven million more since 2007.

Now there are no jobs and even college graduates cannot get a job flipping burgers or digging ditches. There simply are no jobs, and when there is a single opening, hundreds if not thousands of desperate people respond. In this environment the Republicans remain staunchly heartless, and apparently from the results of the last election, the majority of Americans have given them carte blanch to commit even more atrocities.

Wealthy Get Preferential Treatment

It seems clear that Democrats are the party that represent the best interest of 80%- 95% of the population while the Republicans represent only the greed of the top 2% which are billionaires avidly and tolerate the existence of the top 20% which they euphemistically dub the Middle Class. Meanwhile the average person is suffering tremendous financial stress. Republicans have waged war the poor and disenfranchised in America, and about sixty percent of us gave them permission to do so in the last election. It seems that a majority of Americans prefer a congress which does not act in their best interest, and protects wealthy people who have exported their jobs.

Republican Oppositionism

In addition, Republicans have been blocking progress and recovery for two years after the failed Bush administration, clinging to old ideas that do not work, and making sure new ideas are held up. With over 150 topics left hanging, the lame ducks will soon leave congress to the mean spirited Republicans. The three Democrat priorities for this week are Unemployment Extensions, adjusting income taxes for the lower 98% of Americans, and passing the START treaty with Russia. The Republican’s self admitted Agenda is blocking all progress and making Obama look bad so he will not be re-elected.

The country is digging itself out a bit and things are better, but no thanks to the Republicans. The GOP will not do anything to help the American People and are bent on destroying our country in the name of the GOP.

An unemployment extension of 12.5 billion dollars is a drop in the bucket. The Government throws 10 times that amount in the trash every 6 months on projects that never profit the American people. I ask myself what is truth? Should our economic dilemma be viewed with truth and justice as a guideline? Would the Supreme Court be out of their jurisdiction to make a ruling? Maybe we are talking about a moral issue, and if we are, then that would coincide with higher judicial rulings. After all, the welfare of the American people is a moral issue. America has over-extended itself throughout the world. It is time to pull back and look inward. We, the American people, should eliminate social unrest and insecurity. This includes the rich and the poor. Sometimes we have a tendencey to think that only the poor are insecure. After all the rich contribute quit alot to the social structure. People need to understand that a Democracy is not easy. Speech by speech, vote by vote and, amendment by amendment. This is almost always a long drawn out process. The Government will eventually give financial support to the long-term unemployed but, as we have experienced many times before, the cult of politics as usual must have their way. Where will the answers to our unstable economy come from? The answer always comes down to one thing, JOBS. Even so, let us speculate into the future. Imagine an America with no unemployment for those who want to work. Forget about those who are lazy. Only the lazy will be in poverty because they are lazy and therefore they do not count. Anyway, will the Government be responsible and not increase the National Deficit if the entire population were employed. After all, we are talking about an incredible amount of tax dollars received from a 100 percent workforce. The economy may be perfect but unfortunately the restraint to overspend by the Government most likely would over shadow 0 percent unemployment. Besides, there will always be wars to fight and criminal activity. So you see, it is the animal nature of human beings to have more than someone else is where the problem arises from. You can throw all the money you want at the problem, but unless we conquer greed we will never succeed as a free Nation.

It would be refreshing indeed if these writers would update and do a little more research before going to print… The proposed legislation introduced on Nov. 29, 2010 by Senator Max Baucus (D, MT.) and what is refered to as S.3981, is an extension of Tiers 1 thru 4 with an end filing date of Jan. 3, 2012. The legislation does not provide for an expansion of benefits such as a Tier V. While the CBO has yet to release the cost of funding S.3981, the Senate Finance Committee estimates the cost to be around $60 Billion.

Nice to see you have your priorities in order there, Thomas.

  4. Elizabeth says:

Thomas, I don’t care if it’s 12.5 Billion or 60 Billion. I’m a retired Military wife and I can tell you that the government throws away that much money in less than a year on crap!!! Why are we fighting wars in other countries…get our boys home and let these people blow themselves up. WHO CARES…What I care about is people HERE IN THE USA, being thrown out of their homes…not being able to feed their children..no eletricity.

Where is this countries priority’s..certainly not with the American people. These g*ddamn senators are so concerned with tax breaks for the rich and screwing the poor, who’s going to be elected next for president. They are pathetic..and they were voted into office???

Kick their as*’s out when it comes time for re-election. Give them a taste of what it’s like to not ride on our, OUR coat tails and do nothing for us.

If they don’t pass it. They will be forced to feed people somehow…foodstamps…welfare..business’s are going to start going out of business..no money, nothing to buy. Those people will get laid off…fired. It’s a domino effect.

So Republican Senators…Get your heads out of your a** and do what’s right. Vote it thru and stop sending our jobs overseas so they can work.

  5. Sharon says:

Totally agree, Elizabeth. We can’t fire elected officials, but I would think they could be impeached for not doing the work they were elected to do. Just showing up is not working–they actually have to be willing to DO something, not just sit there and say NO, not going to do anything unless you do what I/we want. The Republican party does not want compromise, they want capitulation.

Are you curious, Elizabeth, where there have been no articles on this site since November 30th, with all that’s going on–and nothing from these writers?–or is it just me who can’t access anything else?

  6. Thomas says:

JJeeezzz ladies…don’t jump my ass..I was merely pointing out the inaccuracies of the article. I’m a 99er myself and in need as much as anyone else. Don’t lose your head and go flying off at me and get your panties all bunched up just because your dismayed at the leadership. Your beating up on the wrong people…

  7. Sharon says:

Thomas: I wasn’t jumping on your case (sorry if it appeared that way, I was commenting on Elizabeth’s post alone.

But let me ask you—are you at all curious as to why, with everything going on, there have been no new articles on this site since November 30th?! Or am I the only one who is unable to access anything new?! It is a little weird…

  8. Thomas says:

Sharon – Oh, my bad. All apologies. And yes, I did notice that there are no new articles. Perhaps they are taking a page out of the politicians handbook for ” How To Get Away From It All Without Having To Explain Why”.

  9. Elizabeth says:

Thomas, sorry, I wasn’t really jumping on you…it just makes me so mad that these politicians are playing with people’s life at no thought to what they are going thru. They take their Thanksgiving vacation…X-mas is coming up…they’ll be warm and cozy and have lots of liquor and food in their belly, while THOUSANDS of American’s are Starving and cold.

I have written Senators…if I could afford it…I’d go picket right in front of their house.

Sharon, your right..I haven’t seen anymore information on this site about what’s going on…why…who knows.

I was unemployed for twenty-nine months until I was hired for a seasonal position. Now that my short-term employment is over I find myself back in the running for another short-term job. While I was employed I was amazed at how those employees who have worked for the company for more many years live in a different world than those who suffer short-term employment. It is amazing how employees who never experience unemployment have a completely different world view than other sects of society. What I am about to say may offend a few people. My intent is not to offend, but rather to shed light on a serious problem. Many people who never experience unemployment and a loss of income live in worlds that are completely separate from society and, many of these people are not even conscious of the world around them. Many of these people are not satisfied with life because all they do is work. People go to work without concern for a quality product and the only thing that matters to them is a paycheck. I was surprised when I realized that some of these people make 5,000 dollars a month at a leisurely pace with very little effort except having to sit through meetings of which no one is listening and has very little concern for. Five thousand dollars is more than I make in a year. It is discouraging to go to work in an environment where people are not patriotic and could care less about America. Although I experience periods of long-term unemployment it does give me an opportunity to meet people and interact in society. I enjoy our heritage that has been given to us by American patriots who have made contributions in the past so that we today could have a better life. America is moving forward. We are at a political stand-off. This is typical in politics. When the smoke clears what is best for America will triumph. There is a mess in America that will take fifty years to clean up. It is a matter of getting people to co-operate for the good of the whole country. Science can be a gold mine for the good of humanity if people would just open their eyes. Education can set millions of people free from small-minded thought patterns. We must make the path to education broad and accessible to everyone. We must open our minds and look to the future and not have fear of a greater purpose than what we strive for today. A perfect world involves monetary transactions with a modest profit margine. We must stop persecuting the rich and look for more important solutions to our present problems. Let us get rid of the greed. A computer in every living room and an electric car in every garage.

I am beginning to wonder why no new information has been posted on this site. Maybe the editors have gone on vacation. Possibly they have dropped the site on us and want us to download new information. The ball is there. All you have to do is pick it up and start dribbling.

Excellent website you have below friend. I’m still very new about this blogger universe and have zero skill at coding and likewise. Will it be hard to make and manage a site? My design talent is quite fine but I think it will be tough for me to build a nice layout such as yours. I’m sorry for this out of topic comment.
