Unemployment Extension: 99ers In Dire Need Of Tier V
By Phillip Williams on August 12, 2010, 8:33 am Posted in Finance NewsAs congress continues to try and sustain extensions for those on unemployment, there is no mention of any help for those who have been on supplemented income for more than 99 weeks. Congress men and women are doing all that they can to push Tier V through it’s legal paces, but none of them are considering the loss of aide that is going to those whom have been out of work since December 2007.
Unemployment Extension: 99ers In Dire Need Of Tier V
Contrary to the beliefs of most American’s now receiving income help from the federal government, there is no aide coming for anyone whom has been on unemployment income for more than 99 weeks. The minority of those receiving unemployment benefits has doubled since 2007, and is now near 1.4 million people who are in need of supplemental income.
“99er’s” has been the coin phrase used for those folks who have been on unemployment for 99 weeks or more, and they are looking at a large losses if they aren’t included in the unemployment extension. With the amount of businesses that are falling into debt and foreclosure, there are fewer jobs available for the unemployed and less options for sustaining independent living.
More jobs and help have been promised by our government, but even as they continue to drag their feet on passing Tier V, they still have yet to yet to create any meaningful economic differences. The only jobs that have been created are a part of the military or are underfunded construction jobs. While their are at least five applicants for every job opening in the country, the government continues to make more laws limiting business and free trade and to deny help to those coming up on their 99th week.
What’s The Hold Up
Most lawmakers in the government have made it clear that they feel allowing any person to stay on unemployment for than 99 weeks, is enabling them to deny menial jobs that could be bringing in income. Even if if those jobs could potentially bring in less income than the unemployment itself. Lawmakers have admitted that it is the previous and current white house administrations that have continued to degrade the economy; though they refuse to be help responsible for those who are now or soon to be out of options.

I live in Florida, I just called Unemployment since I only have $751.00 left in my bucket and I am only on tier 1…well I will roll into tier 2.. BUT since they made the cut off date 12/4/10 (to Exhaust ALL tiers)…. I was just told, that my bucket may be as low as $15.00 by then… GET THIS PEOPLE I WILL NOT ROLL INTO TIRE 3 !!!!!!!!!!! your Done Unless these Fucking Blind Bastards do this all over again in November !!!! Remember my fellow Brothers and Sisters, they ONLY extended the cut off date until AFTER Election Day !!!!!! Please don’t be blinded because OUR SOOOO Much Needed $$$$ is finally trickling in…. it will be gone immediately after there sworn in for another “2″ Years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am on my last week of unemployment. Without a tier V I will be down and out. There are no jobs out there. I do all the right things, send out resumes, make calls, go to offices fill out those crazy questionairs online when you fill-out applications for jobs. I am 52 and I know my age has something to do with it, but the jobs just are not there. I heard that over 450,00 new unemployment claims this week. It is not looking good. The people that say the long term unemployed are just using the system are wrong. We want job, but they are not there. What happened to the stimulus package. Where are the jobs that were promised. Nancy Poloci can spend money to save a little owl in California, but she can’t spend the money to help the 99′s. What append to the America I grew up with?
@Glenn… No Jobs, Heck I cant even get an “Agency” to even Call Me Back !!! I have been doing Medical Billing and Collections for 23 years and NOT even a friggin call !!!
Perhaps the “unemployed” should stop their frantic job search for just a moment to consider where jobs come from. The very entitlement attitude that is being shown by “99ers” is what has over time caused the financial mess that we are currently in and keeps new jobs from being created because it causes such a burden on those that create the jobs (I am not talking about the govt.).
These may sound like harsh words but they are true and if the masses do not start taking more personal responsibility for themselves the entire system will collapse under so much dead weight.
Stop looking for a handout and let your hunger drive you to produce something that is needed. This is basic economics.
“What’s The Hold Up????” The reason that this article gave for the hold up is true to an extent, how about the reason for the hold up is that they are on recess ONCE AGAIN!!!!! I am so glad during this crisis that they can go on recess so often! This is ludicrous! While they are on vacation eating their fancy foods, enjoying their big homes, driving their fancy cars, checking their bank accounts and seeing that they have nothing to worry about millions of us are left to rot in limbo. I have never heard of a job that gives so much time off and pay so well! Way to go Washington!
Does anyone realise we are going to go through this AGAIN after Nov 27th 2010 ?????
Does any body know if we can watch/see what is going on in NYC with the rally ?
Hey Gary… A hand out.. really? You think 99ners should go apply for jobs that they are far to qualified for? You don’t know anything about 99ners situations. I’m not a 99, but i wouldn’t expect someone who worked 30 years in manufacturing to start flipping burgers!! Sure there are a few lazy people out there, but the majority would rather work and not be stressed out from getting half a pay check
When someone tells you that you are no longer employed and there aren’t jobs out there what do the greedy Republicans expect you to do? I think it is to go under and just die quietly. They act as though we put ourselves in this situation and am enjoying collecting a fraction of what we made when we were a decent employee contributing to the success of some large corporation until they were forced to turn their backs on us. Why do WE pay the price for all the Gov’t and Wall Street bullshit that put us in this situation to begin with? Obama was handed a mess by the Resluglicans..anything less than perfection from him is being critisized while the hypocrits in gov’t bitch about paying for things. You can only shake your head when the opposing Senators start spewing their pus. Sen. Nelson of NE. is just a shameful political puppet. He is just trying to save his ass at election time which I hope backfires on him. Well..thought I would rant a bit while I am actually getting a internet connection from the neighbor. No money for gas to get to interviews which seems to almost be useless. I’m not qualified for the jobs I seek as printers don’t seem to be hiring in my neck of the woods. Doesn’t help being almost 50 years old although I think I could work circles around those young whippersnappers, Later folks.
Gary may God grace you & your with what the 99ers have had to go through. I guarantee that will change your attitude REAL FAST !!!!!
Are any of you aware that the Senate came back into session today? After they adjorned for a month long recess (till September 13), they came back in to session today just to pass a couple of pieces of legislation #1)Border Security and #2)A resolution honering the memory of FORMER Senator Ted Stevens. Well, we can certainly see where their priorities are. NOT on the unemployed of this country!
Gary…are you kidding?
Most of the big companies took our jobs overseas and those same greedy bastards that allowed this happen are trying to put the blame on us!!!
35 years working towards the American dream only to have the rug pulled out from under me…lost everything including my dignity!!! I can’t even get a job cleaning toilets!!!
Be thankful you are not one of us and until you are…keep your comments to yourself!
Just a thought…After the last extension finally passed, I just got my first check last week. I had got behind on most of my credit cards car payment and mortgage. I started looking at how much my late fees and penalties had tallied up to…I was shocked! $326.00 for the month of July. That was one of my entire checks? Was this all planned? Are the banks still ripping us off? Times that by the millions and you can get an ideal why it is better for politicians to drag it out. The banks are making money on the poorest people in society! It is truly shameful…
John T….that is certainly a different approach that I hadn’t even thought of. You may be on to something.
It seems that most of you here are so blinded by their own rage that they have not paid any attention to the point of my first post. Read it again and you will realize that it contains the message to transform you from a slave to a free person. The government will not take care of you other than to buy your vote. The government can’t take care of itself. Without us, the people producing something ourselves there is no government.
Since most of your posts attack me on a personal level I will share a little of my experience. I have a GED education. I support a family and lost almost everything financially two years ago in the downturn. Since then I have started another business from scratch, no loans, no benefits. I have never received even one unemployment check or any assistance government or otherwise. I has not been easy but it works.
I am not here to attack anyone but to try to help you see that you must help yourselves.
hey dummies, dummies there are no dam jobs. Why bash the unemployed when you should beat up on the employers. Its not the 99ers fault that they are not hiring stupid. Congress need to further their education.
Just curious Gary, what percent of your customers are paying you with UE funds? (or do you just cater to those that caussed this mess in the first place)
” lost ALMOST everything”….. you need to be where alot of us are Gary.
Still not one of you has even tried to answer the question that you claim is all important to you: What makes a job?
Obviously you are not yet hungry enough to think clearly.
Here’s a fairy tail for you Gary…Once upon a time, I had a good job. Spent 25 years building a career while at the same time paying into the “system.” I became the best at what I did. My income rose modestly each year (lower half of single digits) but still managed tobuy a home with cash. Meanwhile, health coverage, property taxes, and energy costs went up by double digits every yeary. Through in a child’s heart defect, a blood clot and a tumor, then losing a job that has now openings anywhere in the country. You lost everything? I lost 25 years of hard work. My home was “liberated” from me because I could no longer pay the all the taxes on it, our mini van, anything that could be sold just to make rent. I don’t feel guilty at all about accepting a few measly bucks from the govment (especially since they where the ones that cut funding to the procjects that I had previously worked).
(BTW hunger does not help you think clearly, why do think armies starve their soldiers?)
A job is a task that one performs with the expectation of compensation (either in the form of monetary or other) I.E. spending several hours a week filling out applications, sending resumes, knocking on doors, would constitue a job. Just compensation would at the minimum would elicit at least a “thanks but no thanks. I’ve gotten two rejection notices out of over a thousand submissions and that is all. How about anyone else?
Its sucks how some employers will jack you around giving you hope about a position they have available. I was told to call back in 2 weeks after a phone interview for a job 700 iles away. I call and am told that he had already made 2 offers to other people but that they had 1 more position they wanted to fill. So I said “shoul I call you?” and he says “sure..end of the week.” But I called him back and said,” sir…if I have a chance for this position please let me know because if not I am a big boy…I can take it” and he responded “well, we were looking for someone who had a little more experience on our type of equipment.” I told him thank you for considering me and hung up. Almost had my hopes up for a whole week due to this guy playing games with my serious situation. I have left so many resumes in Florida and in Tennessee and this was the FIRST contact that I had gotten and I was so sure I was in and then the rejection. But I will keep putting out my resumes and applying online and hope and pray that a company calls me and wants to give me a chance. I have over 20 years experience in my field. That must be worth something. Was with my last company for 6 years before the layoff and was with another company for over 14 years. That must be worth something. I am finding that these things don’t seem to generate calls.
Hey Gary, are you hiring?
his article is incorrect when it says there is no hope for 99ers. Shame on you Phillip Williams! This has got to be the least accurate source of information on line – and that is saying a lot.
“You may have heard about Senator Stabenow’s recent introduction of a Teir 5 Unemployment Extension Bill. Known as the “americans Want to Work Act or the S.3706, the bill would provide 20 additional weeks of unemployment insurance for individuals in states with unemployment rates of above 7.5%. In addition, the bill also includes a one-year extension of two tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed workers.
After Stabenow’s Americans Want To Work Act, another Tier 5 unemployment extension bill is more recently introduced by Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV). The bill would add an additional 20 weeks of benefits for states with unemployment of 10 percent or higher.”
Wage slavery isn’t the solution. You were taught to evaluate your value by the number of dollars your employer gives you. Have you not noticed that capitalistic ideals are deceptive? Haven’t you noticed that the people who tend to excell in business, government, education … even religion are the ones that drive profit and that profit is maximized by deception, corruption and violation. The people with the money, regardless of quality of product, buy advertisement on corporate owned news media, buy politicians and buy legislation that is favorable to big business then brainwash the gullable public.
The lack of jobs available is the symptom, not the cause of any problem. Gary is only part right, suggesting you be innovative and create a new product/service. The other part is for every day people to demand change – but not expect any politician to make it happen. Barack said he would but his policies are the same as George Junior’s. His “health care reform” was authored by the preditors in the health insurance industry. His promise of public option (to provide competition) and no public mandate was abandoned. Gary is correct about the system collapsing under dead weight, but that isn’t the unemployed people. That is the dry rot of every social institution, which are all built on greed, deception and corruption.
Why did big business take jobs away? Because they could. The objective of capitalism is to maximize shareholder wealth. That is accomplished through any means including negligent homicide, destroying the environment and ignoring any sort of human rights. Now that business owns and blatantly controls congress (small “c” intentional), laws to supposedly protect people (like credit card “reform”) have loopholes big enough for a druck to drive through so there are new and improved ways to scam the American public.
Small business have a very little chance of success against hugh corporations. Example: hardware stores with quality parts and knowledgable service gets bought out or low-balled out of business by the Home Depots of the world, selling reduced quality name brand products with planned obsolence so the greedy shopper thinks he is getting a deal. Olden days, I could take a piece of hardware into the hardware store, get instructions and the correct replacement that would last forever. Now, those places are gone.
NAFTA? Ha! Free trade and globalization good for everyone? Right. Good for big business and their highest executives, not every day people. Good for banks and the international banking community – the richest people in the world. Good for government puppets that put on a show for the American people to continue to be deluded into thinking capitalism is about innovation, creativity, hard work, honesty and integrity. “Go to school, be a loyal employee and do what ever your employer says and you’ll have job security, time off, discretionary income and be taken care of throughout your retirement”. Who still believes that? Certainly not the people who followed the rules and are begging for unemployment crumbs.
Wake up! The rules of capitalism call for profit at any cost. Without a government actually for the (everyday) people, we have no protection from the continued redistribution of wealth from the middle class (through Wall Street Scams, mindless consumption of worthless merchandise, careless use of credit …). Stop complaining, start researching and spread the sad truth that the American Dream is a nightmare.
This has been hard on everyone, but there is palpable age discrimination against those unemployed workers in their 50′s and 60′s. Too young for social security, and too old to be considered by many employers. And idiots like John[Master]Boehner would raise the minimum age for SS if he gets the chance. Ohio deserves this half-wit.
Start a business…with what? When you have sold everything and lost your home and are living in your car, what exactly are you supposed to start a business with? Are you out of your freaking mind? Newsflash – small businesses are going out of business everywhere because WE have had our funds cut off and are no longer in the economy to buy things. People are losing their childen, their minds and their lives over this. People are committing suicide because we have no hope. And you, Mr. Know-It-All, have nothing of worth to say on the matter. Good luck with your business. Check back with us in a couple of years when it’s failed and you can’t get unemployment due to being self-employed.
I created a 99ers tribute video, please check it out, leave a comment, and post it wherever you like.

Here is what we need to tell every blogger and media outlet!
Harry Reid sent the Senate home till 9-13-10 without a 99er bill or the Small Business bill. Help remove Reid as leader of the Senate. Then he brings them back for a $600 million bill for border protection, which was a campaign issue in his state. His campaign is his high priority not the families that are going without.
If you are a 99er or someone that has lost your benefits due to the Senate sitting on their hands. You can’t just blame the GOP. Yes they have blocked everything but there is a way to stop them blocking those issues. Senator Stabenow has a new bill for the 99ers but says she won’t offer it until after they go on break. That is what I am talking about, vacation is more important. Pelosi is calling the house back to pass a small jobs bill. This is for State workers (teachers, police and fireman). So Pelosi is showing toughness but Reid wants his vacation. By Reid coming back for the border bill proves if he would have done that for those two very important bills they would have passed.
To make them (GOP) pass a benefit package for the 99ers and anyone that has lost their benefits the Democrats could have forced them to not go home until it is done. They also blocked a Small Lending bill for small business from community banks, this was a lending bill to create jobs and didn’t add a dime to the deficit. So that needs passed before one of them goes for over a month vacation. So when I say it just isn’t the GOP it is Harry Reid! He hasn’t shown to be tough. If he thought it is more important for those that have lost than those that have allot then he wouldn’t have gone on vacation.
So flood Harry Reids phone lines and fax machines until he gets the message. If you don’t help then you have no right to complain. Here are the contact numbers:
Washington: Phone # 1-202-224-3542 Fax# 1-202 – 224-7327
Las Vegas: Phone # 1-702-388-5020 Fax# 1-702-388-5030
Carson City: Phone# 1-775-883-7343 Fax# 1-775-883-1980
Reno: Phone# 1-775-686-5770 Fax# 1-775-686-5757
Do not call if you do not have a calling plan that lets you call anywhere in the US without being charged for long distance. Use that money for your family. The rest of us have no excuse to complain then do nothing. Reid did go on vacation without fixing these issues so flood those state lines more. By the way I am not a 99er but believe they paid their taxes and they help build our country and helped pay for those in Washingtons easy lifestyles , now they need our help, you might be in the same situation they are in today.
“Stop looking for a handout and let your hunger drive you to produce something that is needed. This is basic economics.”
Sheesh… Typical response of the clueless, greedy, lazy, corrupt employed. Too bad the government bailed out all those clueless, lazy, greedy employed people by borrowing trillions of dollars to prop up the housing/bond markets and the stock market. Had they not done that, many of those lazy greedy employed would be wiped out by now, and they would not be able to cry over the few billions of dollars given to the unemployed, or blame them for all the problems caused by the greedy lazy employed peopled.
Anyway, expect millions more to join the ranks of the unemployed. Cutting off aid to the unemployed, who by the way will spend 100% of what they receive, will only accelerate the slowing of the US economy, and with that, accelerate job losses.
I am not going to piss and moan, I am not going to tell you how much I have lost, but my actions on the tower will tell you whom I blame. My doctor said I am doing much better, but he still has a job and a family. At the end of my rope there is only restitution.
Financial assistance in the form of a Tier V extension or whatever the monetary equivalent, MUST occur soon if not yesterday. I have been in the computer industry
for 20 years, and have not found full-time employment in since mid 2008. Yes, software
people are 99ers too. I know quite a few engineers, accountants, MBA’s , teachers…in
the same state. A Tier V extension would enable ALL long-term unemployed people
a window of hope to alleviate the terror of homelessness, of the darkness and
impending cold of terminated utilities. It is extremely difficult to focus on reasonable
options when fear and stress are making you ill and every resume/cover letter,
every application you fill out seems to vanish in the void, and to get a response that
states you are overqualified or why on earth do YOU want to work here (i.e. Wal-Mart)
with you background? It seems that the America that I was born in has become another
country. A feeling of terror has started to permeate in the educated long-term unemployed. Some of us came from terror-filled streets and neighborhoods of
poverty and went to school in the hope that we would not starve again. Some of
us are not going to starve again. No one wants a Third-World America.
