Unemployment Benefits: Some People Can Apply For Benefit Extensions
By Jeffrey Paulsen on October 19, 2010, 6:46 am Posted in Finance NewsUnemployment in the United States continues to hover around 9.6 per cent. This means that nearly one out of every ten Americans do not have a job. Fortunately, many of the unemployed qualify for unemployment benefits. In July, Congress approved new legislation to extend the eligibility dates for benefit extentions to November 28, 2010. This legislation, which was signed by the President, means that a person who exhausts their unemployment benefits by the previous week, November 21, 2010 will be eligible for EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation).
Other Unemployed People Can Move To A New Tier
If you are unemployed and you are nearing the exhaustion of your current tier of EUC, by the week ending November 28, 2010, you will be eligible to move to the next tier. Although this is handled differently in the various states it provides 67 additional weeks of unemployment benefits. This does not include the original 26 weeks that most any unemployed person can receive. This means many people qualify for a total of 93 weeks of unemployment benefits.
Three Tiers Offer A Total Of 47 Weeks Of Benefits
EUC currently operates three tiers for a total of 47 weeks of emergency benefits. Tier 1 is offered for 20 weeks. Tier 2 is offered for 14 weeks. Finally, Tier 3 is offered for 13 weeks. Emergency benefits, offering 47 weeks of benefits, are provided under the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program. In addition, 20 weeks, known as Extended Benefits, are available for 20 weeks. These additional 67 weeks of benefits are basically claimed in the same way as the other unemployment benefits. A person can go to the Benefits Online Page. Once at this location the “Claim Weekly Benefits” is clicked. If you do not have a computer or you prefer to speak with someone directly then you can call the Tel-Service number.

I called and was told that I would transition from Tier 2 to Tier 3, but was not eligible for Tier 4 because it is being phased out. I don’t understand why once you are eligible for EUC, why can’t you receive all of the Tiers? They put a deadline on it! It’s not fair for individuals that have lost their jobs but just lost them too late to receive all of the Tiers. What good are the benefits if they are not helping the people that need them the most? I also recently tried to get my mortgage refinanced through the Making Homes Affordable Program and was turned down because I couldn’t show that my EUC or UC would last at least 2 years! Again, what good is having this program if its not helping the people that need it the most? I am now paying what I can afford on my mortgage and try to at least pay 30% of my income, but have fallen behind in my mortgage. There is never any help out there for me. Even on unemployment benefits there is always rules or guidelines that have to be met. It is very discouraging. I swallow my pride and ask for help just to be turned down. I guess you have to hit “rock bottom” and have nothing to get help. Does anyone feel the same way?
I am despair. Like you I tried the ‘Homes Affordable Program’ … it isn’t the fact that I over-extended, it is being unemployed & getting less than a 1/4 of my income for the last year. Plus, our home has devalued in a state where there is a higher than average of unemployed. It is actually a formality of theirs to offer the program to us, I am sure. Why the heck would they seriously reorganize our mortgages when we are getting unemployment that is not guaranteed income if we don’t have a job?
At 58 it is unlikely I will recover from this… I actually doubt that the US will recover to be honest. The world is in a mess, let alone the US.
too me this is all a bunch of crap. how we as a people elect these crooked politians to judge the faith of are lives granted there are a handful of them that care about us and understand about the working and the everyday life of people who make wages under 30,000 a yr. the greed of some people who make over 250,000 ayr that pay these crook to help them get richer and care less for the average family struggling to make ends meet. i have worked 50yrs and never was paid a wage over 65,000 a yr and lived real good. it just goes to show you what america has become. this is why we are in the shape were in. i can.t beleive that everything is on hold cause anyone making over 250,000 wants the same that a person living in poverty gets. these politians that can see that should be banned.
My initial 26 weeks was over on November 27th, obviously I missed the deadline for Tier 1. I was however, placed on EB, but of course that will end on December 7th due to cut off. Question, now that it appears the Nov. 30th extension will be granted, will I return to Tier 1 and go through the tier cycles (if i do not locate employment) or will I stay on EB and when that is done, that’s it. Meaning I will never be placed on Tiers. Thanks for any help offered. And everyone hold on, have faith, I am having no luck finding employment,I made 54,000 at my last job. This was a position that required a Masters degree, unfortunately, I only have a high school diploma and a few college courses, but was offered this job due to the last person quitting abruptly. At almost 50 years old, no one is hiring with just a high school diploma…is it too late to go to nursing school…can’t sell Avon or Mary Kay, no one have money for that either. It’s rough but we all have to hold on and realize that this will be the last extension granted ever, so hopefully we will all locate some type of employment. Thanks for answering my original question about EB being placed back to Tier 1 and just out of curiousity, how many think 48 years old is to late to start Nursing school?
