Unemployment And Cobra – Republican Solutions to Health Care
By Janet Peterson on August 29, 2010, 8:20 am Posted in Finance NewsEmployment benefits were extended for up to 99 weeks. The job market has shown small signs of recovery, although the weekly first time unemployment claims rise every time that they are reported. The extension did not include coverage of the COBRA subsidy. Democrats wanted to extend it but borrow more money from China. The Grand Old Party favored borrowing against the stimulus package, but neither of these solutions were ideal. What solutions should have been considered that were truly Republican in nature?
Other Ideas for COBRA and Tier 5 Unemployment
Even the most stereotypically cold-hearted Republican knows that people were hurting, but extending the benefits at all may not have helped the economy. The core issues have not changed. Businesses are uncertain about what the Obama administration will do and credit has not started flowing. Instead of worrying about keeping the economy stumbling along, congress should have taken bolder measures to get the economy moving. One of the bold measures was extending the Bush-era tax cuts and promising to fight cap and trade and overturn the health care reform bill. Not extending the health insurance subsidy is a step in the right direction.
Unemployment Encouraging People to Find Jobs
The economic news remains grim, but businesses such as the Susquehanna Valley Mall in Shamokin Dam are seldom hurting for customers. An increasing number of people may be working under the table to avoid the extensive tax hikes encouraged by the Obama administration, or they are keeping unemployment benefits and working under the table for the benefits. Keeping the unemployment benefits coming has not encouraged people not working or working under the table to find work. Fighting the tax increases is one solution that may reduce the need for COBRA and other government sponsored taxpayer funded health insurance programs.

RU kidding me? I hope this is not your regular job, because if it is I want it. Obviously you don’t have to do any research there.
There are 5 applicants for every single job (even at Mcdonalds). Tax cuts for the wealthy have NEVER worked before. Why would they work now?
Living on $200/week doesn’t discourage you from looking for work. And with COBRA gone, all of it goes to health insurance anyway.
