Tier V Unemployment Extension: Could Special Session Be Called

By Ashley Jones on July 30, 2010, 5:53 am Posted in Finance News

This is the last day that our Congressional leaders will meet for a while…they start their August recess. I almost wish I could, but they are leaving without passing (or even starting) an additional tier that the millions of 99er’s are looking for. On blogs and comments all over the internet 99er’s are calling for revolt, some are even calling for armed revolt. This seems a little drastic, but there is another way to get the message to our leaders…Through President Obama.

Special Sessions

In the past, Presidents have used a power that they have to call Congress back into session to pass or work on important issues. This has become a rarer event over the last 50 years, but the power does exist. Past Presidents have used this power to respond to wars, economic crises, and important legislation. During the Great Depression President Roosevelt called a special session to deal with the banking legislation that was desperately needed. This was dubbed “the first hundred days of the new deal.” Truman called a special session during the “Do nothing 80th Congress” to embarrass the Republicans for not acting on important Social issues.

Available–But Not Likely

Even though the power is available to the President, as I said before, it is a rarely used power now. But there is time to change his mind…if the 99er’s fire up the faxes and e-mails again, and there have already been calls out to the 99er’s to join call-in campaigns. Tiervtostayalive.com is waging an all out campaign targeting the Presidential e-mail, fax machine, and White House phone lines. With over 5 million 99er’s that have run out of benefits there are a lot of calls and answers that need to be made. Senator Schumer is still fighting on the 99er’s side, but office staff has told reporters that the Senator (and his staff) are “tired.”

I think that a Tier V MUST be passed ASAP. I have worked since I was 12 and paid taxes since I was 16. I’ve been unemployed for a little over 2 years now and have applied for 1186 jobs. I have received 5 interviews and no job offers. It is totally unfair that you can even approve another Tier. At least I will be able to pay my Mortgage and not lose my house and be able to eat more than just bread and water and pasta. You are always able to help with other countries when now this country is going to be proverty stricken. $1,000.00 a month wont break the taxes and it will just barely does much for us anyway. I would like to have a job to go to everyday but no one will hie me. I gave 25 years of my life to a company that let me go when the recess started. I am highly educated and very much experienced. However until I find a job IF EVER. at least the $1000.00 a month will help. Right now I have gone thru ALL of my retirement money and I dont qualify for food stamps or any other help. You go home to big beautiful homes and eat good food. Look at most of you. You dont look under feed. I no longer have health benefits after all of my life being able to go to the doctors without worry. I am now like the 3rd world countries. A Tier V and more needs to be passed. I am not lazy and would rather go to work and have money in the bank then to have to lose everything. Tier V MUST be PASSED… Look you guys get to go on a vacation I get to stay home and scrimp and beg for food and help.

  2. Mel says:

Well, said Vicki! I couldn’t have said it better. I’m in the same boat as you.

  3. Anna says:

Not invited to Chelsea’s wedding, because he might rip open gifts, I can see Omana and Michele doing that, since they know how to rip open our lives.
You go Chelsea, I’m proud of you.
Let’s put the Obama’s in there place. They are not wanted since all they do is take vacations, play golf, and have no respect for the American People.
How can our President forget about us and our children.
    We need a TIER 5

  4. Katherine says:

Vicki that was well said and we desperately need a Tier 5. I am in the same boat, except I no longer have to worry about a house payment because it is too late for that. No I have to figure how I am going to move out of my house by August 27th. What I hate the most is giving up my independence, self esteem, self confidence and again my independence. I’m not so old that I need a rest home, or others to take care of me physically. This is so damn hard.

  5. get real says:

Charles Schumer-his office states he is tired of fighting for 99ers.
Tired? Shall I state what I could, about HIM, being too tired?
Will he have a bed to sleep in, roof over his head, electric, phone, medical, water….when he goes home to rest?
Many 99ers will not….but he needs his rest.

Reid, Brown, Stabenow, and the rest that brag on camera they are for the 99ers…yet waiting for the bill to be introduced.
Hey, got news for ya……YOU should be writing and introducing the damn bill!
Apparently while stating you are for us, you are actually telling us you think we 30 million are so stupid….that we do not know what you are waiting for….IS IN YOUR JOB DISCRIPTION!!!
Or is there a tiny ‘write the bill fairy’ out there that just needs a tiny bit more of magic dust to finish it?

Maybe Obama should take one minute, STOP patting his own back….and REALLY take action.
If he passed a tier 5—he would not have to plaster his face and pat his own back, EVERY DAY on TV. THE PEOPLE would be applauding for him!
    ‘Getting’ the message….

    But…..lets discuss votes.

    REAL unemployment is 30%.
We are in a depression, no matter how you try to candy coat it.

    Hmmmmm…VOTES.
30% of 300 million people in the USA.
Take THAT figure and double it to include spouses, better halves, etc.
Then add (of age) children who vote, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and friends still employed…witnessing the heartache of their loved ones, who are unemployed. Tiers 1, 2, 3, 4, KNOW they will become a 99er.

    HOW WILL THEY ALL VOTE>>>>>>

The Repubs are known as the party of no. We have watched them every day on CSPAN. They can not fool the unemployed with their illusions and lies. We witnessed the process every day they kept dragging their feet and voting no.
    Derogatory statements by all.

Republicans will not get the votes…UNLESS…their opponent- is an incumbent.

The Repubs will get the win….BUT….
in the NOvember election….the Dem running against them….will win the ELECTION.

Do not mistake, the Repubs will not win the elections.

The 99ers gave THEM 99 plus weeks to fix the problem. THEY failed miserably.

THEY forgot they work for us. AMERICANS!

The unemployed will go NOvember in droves, to hand THEM…..THEIR pink slips.

    Welcome to the unemployment line.

We are waiting……over here…..look close at the tent cities….they are there…see them? Welcome.
    Welcome to America.

  8. Ron says:

Its all rather self indulging, The politicians don’t want to help the good people of this country who need this aid. They would rather help support countries that don’t agree with our democratic system, start and finance wars for either oil or minerals, But when it comes to defending our country, they’ll be the first to ask us to serve, and if your hurt, they treat you almost as poorly when you return. If this is the new America, I’d rather live in Costa Rica…

  10. Travisnc says:

Yes this going to become national tragedy. The unemployment numbers are complete utter non-sense. If you count those that have fallen off unemployment and those that did not qualify in the first place (1099 workers or workers that didn’t qualify quarterly) the numbers would be around 30-40%. These are the numbers that they don’t want Wall Street to know since it would cause widespread panic and sell-off. That is the true numbers but they hide them like the plague. The other skewed number is that I keep hearing the politicians saying that there is only 1 job for every 5 applicants. What a joke! I’m sure all of you know that is complete non-sense also. I recently finally got a call back from a potential employer that I had found online. He told me he had run the ad that morning at 8:00 am and by 11:30 am he had received 213 resumes. He stated that because of that he picked me out of the first 20 for an interview. That is the true numbers. I have 3 more checks left on my fourth tier. After that I don’t know what I will do. I know if I’m still around in November I will vote out as many crooked heartless politicians as I can. I am not holding my breath for tier 5 for I know that it will not pass. Just get ready!
What happens when 20+ million unemployed people and tens of millions who receive some form of government assistance each month suddenly receive no money? How safe will America be? How angry will people become? Can you imagine long lines of people standing outside Walmart begging for food? Can you imagine being robbed at gun point for groceries as you exit a food store? Can you imagine gangs holding “gated communities” hostage within their gates until their financial demands are met? Can you image hospitals and doctors offices closed because there is no insurance and people cannot pay actual costs? When the government tells a huge number of people they will no longer receive government assistance, what choices will they have for survival? Consider Greece again (even though there has been a temporary respite for Greece by the European Union, the drama is not over – keep an eye on it).

I have lost everything right down to my dam cell phone. THIS IS SERIOUS AND SOMETHING HAS GOT TO BE DONE. WE NEED A TIER 5 EXTENSION NOW. MR. PRESIDENT IF YOU ARE READING THIS HELP US NOW!!!!!! I have borrowed money from everyone it is a dam shame. I am 47 years old and out of work because WALL STREET FAILED what the F%^K.

  12. MM says:

The Republic Party is UNAMERICAN and needs to be stopped.

Handing out special visas for foreign workers to take jobs in America is UNAMERICAN.

Sending foreign aid to other countries while our citizens are evicted into the streets to live in their cars and shelters – that is UNAMERICAN.

Closing factories in America to open them in other countries is UNAMERICAN.

Sending call center jobs to India is UNAMERICAN.

Buying products made in other countries to sell in big box stores that are the only stores most people can afford to shop in is UNAMERICAN.

Turning on our own citizens who have worked hard and EARNED unemployment by losing their jobs through no fault of their own– that is just sickening. These people are not welfare lifers. They have worked and believed in the American Dream, only to watch it crumble into nothing.

The NAFTA bill crafted by George Bush, is UNAMERICAN. It is economic sabotage from within. It is the destruction of an entire way of life, the American Dream that we were all taught to believe in.

I knew the Republican politicians couldn’t be trusted, but now I am, in middle-age, distressed to find my feelings growing to include the Democrat party and President Obama. I am completely disillusioned and without any hope that things will get better. We’re caught in a downward spiral that the Republican party seems intent on creating for the sole purpose of making a Democratic president look bad… and that president and the Democratic representatives and Senators are LETTING THEM DO IT.

What ever happened to “by the people, for the people”?

What happened to those lessons we were all taught in third grade, that when a community has needs in common, they pay taxes to get those needs taken care of?

It’s all so disgusting and sickening. I can’t believe what this country has become.

Lets get one thing straight people, the Rebublicans especially in the Senate under minority speaker Mitch Mcconnell are out to obstruct anything the Democrats are for no matter the cost to the nation. He and his fellow cohorts in the Senate are only concerned for any political gains they can make especially with the upcoming midterm elections. If the Republicans make any actual gains this November you can kiss any hopes of a tier 5 goodbye.Their country club, cavalier attitude will alway’s prevail as long as they are elected. In the meantime the desinigration of the nations middle class will increase along with the more power these cronies for the wealthy self interest groups can gather. They don’t give a damn about any of you because they feel that support will alway’s be there as long as things fail under the Democrats and that is their agenda instead of what may be right to get this economy back on track. What fools we mortals be!

  21. Pepper99 says:

Appreciate the knowledge and hard work. My thanks.

This morning I had occasion to visit upon one of my old teacher’s planbooks from way back when. My classes were spending a wonderfully educational, entertaining week on pirates. One of my favorite – how ironic, now – portraits is by the classic by artist, Howard Pyle, entitled “Marooned.” Legend (and history) shares that a pirate who was disgraced might well be ‘marooned’ on a small treeless atoll or spit of sand that would disappear with the tide. He was given water for one day and a pistol, with enough powder and lead to take his own life. Burn up with equatorial sun or chance sharks for a swim of who-knows-how-many sea miles to civilization. Or….as expected (you would think), he would accept the inevitable and blow his brains out. But pirates were loathe to take their own lives. It brought even more sin in the afterlife and cursed his entire family, past, present, and future. What was a pirate to do? All options were fatal and torturous to one’s soul.

I found Pyle’s masterpiece (Google it) and it brought back memories of teaching and the kids. But it also smacked me hard to look at it now and realize that my government has marooned me. But, mine was no disgrace. Forty-plus years of work, all taxes paid. 99 weeks of unemployment benefits is 1/22 of my career in the private and public workplaces. So as I head to SS in a few years, 4.5% of my labors were “returned” to me. If my country was a baseball player, it’s batting average is .045.
I’m sure with all the enterprising and talented cartoonists there are in America someone will (if they haven’t already) draw a cartoon based on Pyle’s theme as the 99ers are left marooned while the ship sails away over the horizon.

    Thanks, Vicki!
I am on it – will push hard for a special session in the calls/faxes/emails and articles I write.

Dash, we are on the internet because we are writing cover letters and sending resumes. I just spent my entire Saturday applying for jobs. This is how I spend all my “free” time and “vacation” while I am not networking and volunteering. I would give anything to go back to work and have a weekend again.

I hope all you know-it-alls get to experience this and get your turn. What goes around . . .

  24. JP says:

    Take it to the Streets…

Everyday I look for work, apply, send resumes, faxes, etc..Then i come home and read web site postings. I only wonder why with the energy you all spend typing in these chat rooms why you don’t organize and take it to the streets. We need Coast to Coast major protest rallies. Guaranteed all news outlets will be all over it and serious pressure will then be on. If we keep in these chat rooms the 99ers that have already lost everything don’t read these they have no electricity. Get out and organize that’s what the Mexicans did in Arizona and look at the attention thru the news they received. Get Out Now or sit there and whine.

  25. ER says:

I do agree that we need to take this to the streets and really get heard because the internet is fine and all but live people are much better heard and yes, if the Mexicans got together to be heard then we Americans need to do the same..We need to take it to the streets. What is happening to people these days?We no longer fight for our rights and yet we vote?

  26. EF says:

Many, many thanks to Rob C. and Donalee King. They have given their all for all of us.Without their constant fight, we’d still be swept under the rug.Without them giving us hope every day, I think many more would’ve given up by now.Keep up the great efforts.Although it may take longer than we want,I do believe you will reap the rewards of helping the millions you are desperately trying to do…God Bless

  27. Hound says:

To the streets! Is poor Chuckie Shumer to tired to help the 99ers?? Tsk, Tsk Chuckie you poor thing. Rest up on your vacation, ok…hope you think of all the 99er’s you let down. Nice to promise Chuckie, but do you have the balls to see it through?

I have applied from every level of employment i can think of, i have been repeatedly turned down, and i called to see if i was one of the lucky ones whom are eligible for the unemployment extension….OF course not… so i am in the same boat as Vicki, cant find a job, can’t drive to interviews..no gas, gas costs money. Be damn sure i will be at the voting polls in November!!!!

  31. cage says:

Wtf? This shouldnt be a beg and plead issue or even an issue at all. The unemployment should be extended until the unemployment rate falls to 4.6% Period! The companies that have moved out and taken the jobs should pick up the check..not a few pennies but what we were making before we lost our jobs. All health care included. Its time we got back in control of our country. This Is America. Be free and be brave!
