Tier V Unemployment Benefits: Still In The Air And Millions are Losing
By Jeffrey Paulsen on May 4, 2010, 9:57 am Posted in Finance NewsLiterally hundreds of thousands of people are losing their unemployment benefits as their extensions run out, and the Senate, most notably the Democrats, are sending mixed signals concerning the Tier V extension that so many are hoping for. With the mid-term elections coming up this is a dangerous game, and the voters have long memories and are very unforgiving.
Mixed Messages Concerning The Tier V Extension
Max Baucus (D-Mont.,) Senate Finance Committee Chairman, told Bloomberg in an interview “You can’t go on forever, I think 99 weeks is sufficient.” Even though he had this to say, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.,) one of the Senate leaders, has emphatically supported an extension for the present unemployment benefits. In a letter posted in the Rochester Unemployment Examiner that was verified, he stated “I will work with my colleagues to create a fifth tier of benefits.” Like statements have been made by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and other Senate members. Senator Harry Reid (R-Nev.,) the Majority Leader, had encouraging words but he also has made no definitive moves yet.
Still Working On It
When questioned about the Tier V extension, Harry Reids’ office in Reno said that the negotiations are still in progress and no specifics were forthcoming. He also pointed out that “I have heard other senators say they will never vote for an extension if it has a Tier 5.” Not good news for the million that will be voting n November. Both the House and Senate has passed measures that will extend benefits until the end of the year, but the measures have to be reconciled still. Mr. Reids’ office has made the statement that the reconciliation will happen before the end of May.

Maybe you can answer this question for me? When Obama was speaking of the unemployment benefits, if it didn’t include the 99ers, why did he have a man who hasn’t worked for two years as an example? We are the 99ers, a lot of the letters that are read in the Senate from people who can’t find work, been out of wo…rk for two years, are we just examples or do we really matter
We don’t matter, Marr. Not to them, anyway. Like I’ve said before: it’s like talking to a dog. You can’t expect it to understand a damned thing.
So, they’ve extended unemployment benefits until AFTER the election. Well, isn’t THAT a coincidence. And is anyone stupid enough to keep the incumbents in just because of that? Guess!
I’m not impressed. I’m still voting the SOB’s out.
As for me and other 99ers…well…aren’t we STILL screwed. No Tier V. No money. No job. And how many times do any of us have to write this before things get better.
Does anyone else feel like they’re never going to see another paycheck again? Or is it just me?
need everyone to call Reid, Pelosi and Obama and let them know NO VACATION until something is done to help the 99ers. Harry Reid 202-224-3542, Pelosi 202-225-0100, Obama 202-456-1111.
Also calls made to the following asking them to write up a bill and bring it to the floor to help the 99ers. These people have all agreed to help, but none of them are taking the initiative to bring legislation to the floor. Chuck Schumer 202-224-6542 Sen Franken 202-224-5641, Sen Merkley 202-224-3753 Deb Stabenow 202-224-4822 Sherrod Brown 202-224-2315 Shelley Berkely 202-225-5965 Dina Titus 202-225-3252 Sen Whitehouse 202-224-2921 and the 800 switchboard number if you don’t have long distance 1-800-962-3542.
Please do what you can to help, the 99ers have been without any income for almost 6 months now. Many have already lost everything they own. We have been leading this fight of extensions for everyone since the fight for Tier 3 and 4. We went months without income, never given retroactive benefits, and never offered Cobra. The 99ers need everyone’s help desperately and quickly to stop Congress and the Senate from leaving until something is done to help. If you are not yet a 99er, you soon will be–the time goes fast–and this bill will help you in the long run. Thanks so much for everyone who is willing.
We will be asking all members to call in to the Senate tomorrow to show support for Sen. Schumers proposed Bill. We want to especially tell Republicans what we think and try to get one of them to give their supprt.
We will target Scott Brown, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins specifically to see where they stand and if any one of them will help co-sponsor this new Bill idea proposed to Sen. Schumer.
how much suffering do we need to go through before we get help from our goverment for a tier five?? no one has credit so if we live in tents we will never get back into a home.. What is wrong w/the senate don’t they understand come November we WILL vote them all out!!! This is bull Shit they are doing this to us!! we are selling everything we own to keep food in our homes and out of the unemployment we have to pay cash for our meds as we are in our mid 50s who is going to hire us if jobs do become available I just want to lay down and die over this…….Life isn’t worth the pain of you people anymore, unless that’s what your hoping for.
yes the 99ers are getting trigger itchy– oh well
I am glad that someone noticed the guy that was unemployed for over 2 years! And all the president has to do is free up funds or sign an executive order. I am an independent but I dont think Bush would have let us starve. Nancy Pelosi has a daughter that does some kind of chronicle about homeless children well you mom is responsible for that and there will be more to come. Remember at some point the doctor will become the patient!
The idea that our prez would stand beside and introduce this “99er” without any comment to his plight, and talk about the extension like it is going to help this man and his family really makes you think. Did he not know, did he not understand the extension and its limitations? Or worse, did he know? Why isn’t someone interviewing this man now? I’m betting he would have a comment or two.
The precedent was keeping up a facade! He was disguising the fact that the bill would not include that man or others like him, known as the 99ers or LTU. His 5 word speech for the unemployment extension had no correlation to the man he presented, who was in fact a 99er. I don’t believe that the president did not know the details of the bill and if he didn’t shame on him as he of all people should know what is going on! Mr. President we still need that extension! How about keeping it real and telling America the real truth. No 99er is getting relief and the recently passed bill does not include those out of work for 2 years or more. How about recognizing that the newly unemployed have an advantage over the 99ers because they will be the first considered as candidates for any new job openings over us (99ers) who have been out of work and have a 2year gap in our resumes. How about realizing that they have a double advantage for having benefits and first choice at jobs while we have little chance at this point to be hired and we don’t even have money for food, clothing or travel to find these jobs. Mr. President, come on you can do better than that! What a feable attempt at addressing our needs, are you serious?????? Tier V to survive, NOW NOT TOMORROW!!!!!
My heart goes out to the 99ers! I luckily still have 13 weeks of EB benefits that were triggered on by this most recent legislation. I felt only a small portion of the stress these people are feeling. Come on Washington, there are no jobs out there. Didn’t the past 8 or 9 weeks prove that? We aren’t just sitting here on our butts, waiting for a check. Quit holding people in limbo, and HELP! That’s what you are there for. Have you forgotten that? Seems the only decisions you guys are pushing are the ones that benefit yourselves. I can only imagine the strain on families that have been out of benefits for months now. You are in our prayers, 99ers. I will be calling and writing whomever I can. God help us (our government sure isn’t trying very hard).
OpenCongress Summary
This bill would add a fifth tier of unemployment insurance benefits in states with unemployment rates above 7.5%. The new tier would provide 20 additional weeks of benefits payments, but it would not pay back benefits retroactively to cover the period between when the last tier expired and the new tier takes effect. The bill also includes a one-year extension of two tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed workers.

The 99er rally in New York on Thursday will be at Federal Hall from 12 noon until 1 pm. This rally will be covered by many major news organizations including 60 minutes. Ed Shultz from MSNBC will be there. It is important that we get many 99ers there
Rep Bacus–Bac-ASS is a very stupid man
he does not realize the depth of the
problem, hope he chokes in some
UI someday
I read that tier v, if passed, would only be for the 16 states where unemployment is 10 percent or higher. Everyone else is screwed.
Please before jobs are available, the 99ers need an unemployment extension benefit. They aren’t getting any more benefits and need help now! Please let Congress know that they need to address the 99er issue the very first day they return next week. This is a human issue. We want Congress to stop treating the 99ers like road kill!
we need everyone to call Reid, Pelosi and Obama and let them know there VACATION is over now it time to PASS BILL S.3706 Harry Reid 202-224-3542, Pelosi 202-225-0100, Obama 202-456-1111.Also calls made to the following asking them to write up a bill and bring it to the floor to help the 99ers. We need to start calling into Congress and the White House to get them moving on passing a bill for the 99′ers. I know many of you continue to call in but we really need a concentrated effort that encompasses not only the Senate, but the House and the White House as well. We also need to get out the vote this year as these ultra right wing tea party nuts cannot be allowed to win their respective elections. Should they win back the House and or the Senate- Then all our efforts will be in vain. Their will be no Tier 5 and funding will most likely cease for the rest of us. Please, this is IMPORTANT
Shaming people for being out of work when the banksters have hijacked the economy and the corporotacracy have outsourced all the jobs overseas is beyo…nd pale. The highest earning CEOs are the ones who have laid off the most people, did you hear? Fox won’t tell you that. So where ARE these jobs? You want to support your 4 kids on a part-time McDonald’s job? That’ll buy them a few meals from the dollar menu. Then when they get sick, say diabetes, from that, where’s their health care going to come from? I believe everyone does better when EVERYONE does better. Never have so many done so much for so few. Now go drink some more of that “greed is good” Kool-Aid. If you are lucky enough to have a good job, you should count your blessings and not take it for granted. They’ll be coming for it, unless you are in the billionaire club. Then you’ll feel differently and may ponder the difference between good luck versus your own heroics. What if you had been born among the majority of people in the world who live on less than $2 per day? People everywhere do what they can to “get by”. The game is rigged so that money begets money and some get by in grand style
Anyone notice that NO ONE in the media is covering the #99ers. Maddow has gone DADT & Veterans issues. Those are important but we are an emergency.
TO THE 99ERS WE NEED TO EMAIL, FAX AND CALL ANY REPUBLICANL(s3706 Americans want to work) This can be done. Ed Schultz have gotten a committment from Deb Stabenow that S3706 will be brought to the Senate floor and argued VIGOROUSLY next week. Our work has just begun. This is crucial so please ASAP start making calls t…o ANY Republican you think will help us and VOTE YES TO THE BILL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please vote NO to the Republican Party all they do it LIE TO THE POOR PEOLPE THEY DONT GIVE A U KNOW WHAT
The Democrats are our best hope for fixing the problems Bush created over 8 years. We must vote and we must vote Democrat! Voting independent? Next time! This time we need to give the Dems one more chance to fix things!
Representative Jim McDermott, WA just stated on “The Ed Show” the 1st bill that should be passed & signed in the Lame Duck session when the return within the next 1-2 weeks prior to the holidays is to extend unemployment benefits. He also strongly noted we can’t have people who have waited so long to go through the holiday season without assistance. Especially, since it expires this month… Time to Continue the Legislative call-in, emails, and fax campaign… This is the about the 5th time today it was mentioned by various sources

MEETING FOR 99ERS and HR589…..Barbara Lee’s statement after the meeting: “We had a productive meeting with the Speaker and the Majority Leader to discuss this critical issue of providing aid for long-term unemployed workers. Speaker Boehner encouraged us to work with the House Ways and Means Committee to move this bill forward, and while we will certainly do so, we maintain that these long term unemployed workers deserve a floor vote NOWWWWWWWW
