Tier 5 Unemployment Extension: Schumers Staff Too Tired For Fight
By Victor Hatley on July 29, 2010, 8:00 pm Posted in Finance NewsI reported this morning that Senator Schumer was working on a bill to create an additional tier for the unemployment benefits, this fact is true. But the sad part of the ongoing story is that the legislation will not be able to be completed and introduced until after the August recess that the House will start tomorrow.
The Phone Call To Schumer’s Office
Today, The Denver Unemployment Examiner reported that his office was non-committal to the issue of the fifth tier, and hinted that there was little likelihood of action until after the recess. When the interview with the N.Y. television station was mentioned the person on the other end replied “he’s tired; it’s hard to get the votes…” Everyone already knows that all Democrats will support this, Debbie Stabenow (D-Mi) said “I’m working on a bill to help them because, when there are five people out of work for every one job opening, it’s the right thing to do.”
Republican Support Is Out There
Republican Senator Snowe supported and voted for the unemployment extension that passed last week, so her support will be easier to gain. Other Republicans have said that if the bill is at least partially paid for that they would support it. But after the filibuster that the Senate just went through some of the Democrats are gun-shy to present any bill that is not completely paid for, even in light of the fact that this type of bill has been passed under Republican administrations in the past as emergency acts.
Unemployment Rate Went Down
But the number of 99er’s went up. The Department of Labor is reporting that the first time claims has dropped to 457,000. This is down from 468,000 in the last report, but still cannot repeat the May number of 452,000. Even though market improvement is showing, the market is still weak. Perhaps because of this, Senator Stabenow (D-Mi) has joined Mr. Schumer in his campaign to create a tier 5.

Hey guys new to the blog but LOS I think you may be being somewhat harsh these people don’t want a hand they need a hand up. I have watched my niece look for a job for two years for a job she has applied way beneath her whatever that means I am helping her but with tax increases I will have to watch what I can do. I’m guessing everyone in this “blog” worked until jobs due to tax increases or the restrictions our country puts on our free enterprise had many companies gulping for air and the downsizing occurred. Let’s face it lifetime terms for senators and representatives allow our elected officials carte blanc with our lives. For those of you who have called various senators to let your voice be heard they always want your zip code if you are not from there state they will not listen to your comment. These people have huge salaries and lifetime benefits and believe me some of our taxes go to pay their salaries they don’t want to listen or are too tired to read bills. Let’s just pass them and then read them really?I thought understanding something BEFORE signing was IMPORTANT. Anyway I digress. Some things that I think would be important in this economy. Bring back free enterprise cut taxes people want to work not be married to a welfare state.Stop out sourcing jobs the reason companies do this is because it is less restrictive as our government gives companies tax credit for this behavior. Secure our boarders NOW there are people I care about very much that are illegals but logically there is not enough to go around anymore. An aside do you know Mexico has the most strict immigration law. If you don’t have you papers on you it is a 2 year automatic jail term first offense. A hard and difficult thing send them home Enforce federal that has been on the books for over 20years. Politicians see these people as the next big building block. These blocks are being built on your back and my back as we are trying to stand these new blocks make it impossible for us to rise. The citizens of this country are being discarded as so much trash. We all built this country with our hard work and it is time we let all politicians know the citizens of this country want this country back. Other countries need to take care of their own. The rules of engagement that were dictated by Obama and carried out by Stanley McCrystal keep our men at risk every day. If this is what we want so be it IF not take our country back bring our boys home we will not be silent as our men and women are sent in on suicide missions because of rules of engagement. No radical Muslims should be respected over our citizens who have worked and shed blood for this country. I say try to do this all correctly if we can for as long as we can. Do not let these issues divide us but bring us together in a common goal. United we can make changes divided changes are made for us. If all else fails there is that bit of action for example The British are coming as well as the war between the states never rule that totally out. We still have the right to bare arms
Sorry guys I obviously did not punctuate my initial blog very well—I was rambling. I’m very passionate about our country.
@ LucasOwenSmith – want math? If there is 1 job for every 5 seekers (from the Department of Labor), that means out of the 14.6 MILLION reported unemployed people, there are only 2.92 MILLION jobs. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH JOBS for 11.68 MILLION people. Since the true number of unemployed is much larger then reported, this is a conservative estimate.
While Libertarian ideals, like Capitalistic ideals are great, legislation in this country favors rampant greed and systemic corruption harnessed by the elite at the expense of middle class lives. Unethical government and business practices use the guise of free competition to destroy the planet, enslave populations, limit technological advancement, ignore employee safety, expand and perpetuate poverty, etc. The world’s richest people have become richer because of redistribution of wealth called 401K plans invested in the stock market that crashes when they take withdrawals, income taxes that charge more to those who make and do things, war, etc. The saddest part of the system is that the elite use middle class people as agents to destroy the middle class by perpetuating divisive rhetoric, hurling insults, creating false issues and publicizing debate on centralized media – all controlled by the elite families of the world.
And LucasOwenSmith – Do you sometimes go by the name “Dash” or “Tired of Whining Seniors” – the self proclaimed “tea bagger”, getting paid to monitor these boards and getting off on cyber-bullying? Either way, you are fully indoctrinated collateral of the United States Corporation being used to divide the masses.
@ everyone else – Stop defending yourselves! You give away your power by justifying your position. The writer going by the name LucasOwenSmith today is right when he says
“Government bureaucracies are byzantine, impenetrable, utterly uncountable, & self contradictory. They are NOT your salvation. You yourselves are.”
Use your power to keep fighting for Tier V benefits, reversing legislation that favors outsourcing and importing, calling government officials – especially those paid to represent YOUR interests, looking for work, starting your own business, figuring out how to live after being collateral damage of the war against the middle class and to bring the diverse masses together. We have more in common with even people as opinionated, judgmental and cruel as “Lucas” than we have with the elite for which he is merely an unsuspecting agent. Division keeps our attention diverted from the real issues.
Keep reporting your unemployed status to your state agency as long as you are actively seeking and available for work. This reporting goes into official reports about the active job seekers and affects the official unemployment rate, used to claim recovery for politicians and reasons for middle class investment back into Wall Street.
I can’t believe that I cannot pay for utilities, gasoline, food and car insurance. What country do I live in?
@New Paradigm… I continued to file my weekly unemployment status for 2 months after my benefits ran out.. because I want to be counted.. but .. guess what.. they sent me a break down of all the tiers that I received and then … blocked me from filing my unemployment status after that.. just the way they are.. if you are unemployed and are not receiving unemployment checks.. YOU DONT COUNT.. that is the end of it.. They know that there are millions of people who were 1099, self employed, business owners.. who never received any unemployment benefits.. they just choose to not count them.. .AND THERE ARE 100′s of Applications for EVERY SINGLE AVAILABLE JOB… of the 1100 jobs that I have applied for.. there was only … 1 that had less than 100 applications.. and that was a small hotel in a little town in Texas.. they still had about 15 applications… I have gone to 4 States seeking work or income of any kind… it is just not there.. BUT THE MEDIA and THE GOVERNMENT have their LIE… their “Story” that there are 6 job seekers for every job… when they know good and well that there are 100′s of job seekers for every job.. in the entire country.. it would just bring a public panic and serious call for accountability .. to Government Officials.. if they would allow the “Truth” be told in the media..
So will there be an extension 4 99ers by November
I am on the streets living in my car now with my 2 dogs and my bird. I have applied for every job that I am qualified to do and some that I’m not. I was a property manager earning 4000 a month when the owner was forced to sell and lay me off. I am 50 years old and planned on retiring at that job. There are about 200 applications for every one job. Employers are hiring the younger folks for these jobs. What do I do? It is summer and it’s hot. I am living in my car. PLEASE! We need a tier 5.
Ignoring the unemployed who need jobs or ui checks to stay off the street is inhumane, and will stress already overburdened state aid programs that rely on federal funding, to the breaking point. The “deficit” argument is moot when YOUR party’s constituents are living out their cars or worse, in the gutter. Waiting until September to vote on tier 5, after recess, telegraphs a reprehensible political move. Politicians will pay at the polls.
VOTE THEM ALL OUT IN NOVEMBER!
Come November, I do not plan to vote for anyone that stood in the way of helping the unemployed. These Americans have worked hard for a living and at no fault of their own (job eliminated by downsizing or sent out of the country through outsourcing) are now unemployed. They want to work, but can’t find anything no matter how hard they try. Our elected officials have let the American people down. I was always proud of being an American and proud of our government, but that has completely changed. These people who seem not to care about the welfare of every American need to be voted out.
Truth…you stated it perfectly! I can’t believe anyone is freaking out of a few hundred dollars a week, when the economic impact is very beneficial, and it’s the human way to behave in a first world country. Makes me so angry when I think of the 50 billions dollars going towards war and foreign aid, yet some people choose to pick on the laid off people. Get a pie chart of the federal budget and then ferret out the real troublemakers.

This is really not fair how do they expect us to live without this unemployment. We are having the same hard time as everyone else to get a job. Every tier needs the extension. This needs to be fixed asap because all this will do is increase the crime rate and the homeless rate.
The world should not have to go through such a problem as these things we go through.
Why don’t they just quit wasting time and pass the darn bill. These politicians just want to wait till it’s closer to election day and then we are supposed to be grateful and vote for them. I haven’t had a UE check since the first week in June, 2 months now. Don’t know how I’m going to keep the utilities on. Tier 5 would be great but what’s going to happen when that is up unless there are some jobs created. For all the unemployed that are nearing retirement age, let them go ahead and draw social security. Oh, that’s right! That money is already gone so no luck there.
It’s “deja vu all over again”…they go on vacation, leaving people without resources, waiting for them to return and throw out a crumb of human compassion. This delay COULD be prevented…Executive Order NOW!!!!!!
I was sorry to hear that at staff member from Sen. Schumer’s office is ‘tired’.I understand how difficult it is to wage an uphill fight or continue to wage an all but unwinnable battle.
We the unemployed do it too-everyday. For the past two and a half years I along with othe 99ers have continued to struggle to survive. We built this country with our responsibility to work every day and pay our taxes.Doesn’t Congress realize the domino effect of continued unemployment benefits to the longterm unemployed. We no longer pay taxes of any kind. Our local and state governments suffer .At least the federal govt received taxes on the benefits.
This is truly sad for us all.How can congress allow its constituents to suffer. How does congress take time to pass national this day and national that day and not find the time or energy to pass a TIER 5 extension. Last yera I kept my thermostat to 62 degrees in the winter,This year gas prices rose again .Its like the song ” how low cam you go?” Well we have all witnessed how low some members of congress have sunk in denying a Tier 5 extension of benefits’benefits of which all of us have paid in to.I wonder if they will do this to SOcial Secuity.
Kimbob,
I do not believe a word you have written! I am a 99er and if your so worried about a tax increase that means that you are the two % of the population that are wealthy! Some people may, buy your neice act, but what do you really know about the 99ers? probably nothing! What do you know about telling your children they cannot eat today? probably nothing! What do you know about living in your car and telling your children you have no other shelter for them? probably nothing! I do not think or feel sorry for anyone that thinks its ok for the children and middle class in this country to be reduced to poverty because someone like you the 2% of the richest in the country is worried about a tax increase! People need to wise up and realize that you are the enemy! You could care less about the unemployed! I do not buy your tax me, feel sorry for me crap! You should be ashamed of yourself, for allowing anyone to go homeless or hungry and allowing your party to call the middle class Americans with educations lazy and drug addicts. Sharon Angle is in La La land if she truly thinks my unemployment of $956.00 a month keeps me, a college graduate with 6 years of college happy, and keeps me from looking for a job! She is a nut, just like Sarah Palin! I can only pay my house payment, and need foodstamps and my parents to help me pay for my other expenses! Its degrading! I have worked 30 years to only be called these names by the republican party. If you are that shallow, and only care about the rich you should be ashamed and god have mercy on your soul! The republican party does not care about the unemployed at all!!!! To think that people like you cannot pay a few extra dollars in taxes that you probably blow within a month on silly crap without whining, you are a shallow uncaring person, who clearly does not care about the unemployed or the hungry homeless children, that are living in a car, because you have been given a tax break!!!! If anyone sees through this man please remember the republican party votes no on every unemployment extension, but votes yes for tax breaks for the 2% rich people. If you make less than $250,000 a year the republicans could care less if you die in the streets! This man is clearly an example of selfishness!! And how uncaring the republican party is!!! GOD BLESS THE HUNGRY CHILDREN! May the Democratic party look over Gods flock of hungry, homeless children!!! God will prevail over these evil republican rich people who do not care!
Why not use the Bear Sterns format – Giver 50 billion dollars on so that bankers, brokers, & lobbyists can keep their 2nd home multi-million dollar in the Hamptons. Then claim that this is the best decision ever made. Of ccourse this is BS – but should’nt the same standards of money distribution be given to the masses of people called tier 5. Who can’t even own a home -because thier jobs have been exported to other countries.
