Some Disturbing News About The Tier V Unemployment Extension

The work that has been done up to this point on behalf of unemployment extensions has been outstanding and commendable. Congressional leaders have been alerted to the plight of the American public, but there is a new threat that, while the reality existed, may come to the attention of the leaders that are already supporting these measures, and destroy all the good work that has been done.

What’s Happening

The Detroit News is reporting that the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association is having problems with the applicants their members have been calling to come to work. It seems that some are requesting that they be paid in cash, or that the employer wait until the applicants benefits run out, or (in some cases) flat refusing the jobs so they can keep their benefits going. Not only are these actions illegal they are destructive to the continuing efforts of the people working diligently to insure that the honest folks needs are not ignored. This also serves to give ammunition to the idiots on The Hill that are against these measures, it was exactly what they have been waiting for.

 

Damage Done-Let’s Work To Fix It

It’s true that the Detroit News is a highly regarded publication, but we can hope that this is an isolated report. If this becomes a more commonly seen type of report, all hope of an extension will be out the window. Personally I believe this report to be isolated, but more of these must be shut off at the source…the lazy idiots that want something for nothing. I know there are well educated overly qualified individuals out there that would have been happy to have accepted these jobs, so let’s stop turning them down.

    Well, I out here in California with no more benefits and no income at all can say I am not like those mentioned in Michigan. The powers that be are more than welcome to look at my bank records as well as my little tin can I am currently living in and see for themselves that such is not the case. They can also call every employer in the world to see that i haven’t refused any work — which would be impossible being as no work has been offered.

    But anyways, I really don’t think this will change things as we all remember that the powers that be recently gave a big old sack of our money to banks who were knowingly stealing money from the people…then took that money to pay out some hefty bonuses. It seems like the people of Michigan are just following the government’s lead. Right?

    I CAN’T WAIT to vote all these snakes out of office this year! I truly hope to bump in to them at the unemployment line as they slither around looking for work themselves…

    Give me a break…lol Like someone collecting unemployment benefits would really have the nerve to be that stupid… Look for work….get called….and then ask them to wait until their benefits run out or pay them cash…lol Do you really think I believe that story ? Someone that is on unemployment and needs to keep a roof over their head and feed their family would never risk losing their benefits unless its young people that maybe live with their parents and dont really give a dam one way or another.
    I just dont believe it…and it sure dont take away from the many upstanding hard working people in this country losing everything each and every week because the government cant get off their ass and do what is right when we need them. There is always going to be a few bad apples in the bunch !
    Look at medicade fraud and the billions of dollors lost every year ! They dont stop the program because of the bad apples there…do they?

    I new this would be the outcome, what can u expect when one just sits on their ass and fax. I’ve been saying for weeks that we need to get out there and march/protest but no one wants to do that, so I say i’m out of here, I can do better playing lotto.I’m tired of people not really wanting to do something constructed besides faxing and signing petitions.I’m putting my energy somewhere else.

    Anyone that is on unemployment and refuses a job they applied for should be reported to the unemployment office. It is those few that wreck it for us who are pulling our hair out looking for work and wonder how we are going to keep our bill’s paid and a roof over our heads. I say if a employer calls them for a job and they pull that kind of crap, they should be reported and have there unemployment suspended. Have the potiental employer sign a letter to the unemployment office that they were offered a job and they refused it becouse they don’t want to loose there checks. You get the idea. Hey it’s not like welfare to the illegal imagrants. This country is hurting and those of us who want to get back to work shouldn’t be punished by those looking for a free ride.

    I believe it, cause it happens all the time. There are a certain amount of people that don’t want to work at all. And, what did these jobs pay? If you are making 1900 a month on unemployment why would you take a job for 8$ an hour? That is just stupid. Once it runs out you will take that job. Or will you?

    what state do you know of that provides 1900/month in unemployment. in cali, which is one of the highest states, i believe the amont is ~1800-1900

    and yeah, i know more than a few who’ve made $100K+, who would love the $8/hr…

    there are quite a few who are looking to work, and can’t find it..

    hmm…

    i actually made a couple of calls… and read the story… it’s not as bad as it appears…

    basically, it points out that there are some people who are theives/lazy, and try to game the system… and this surprises some!!! look at the politicians, the bankers, enron, etc… people of all economic strata try to screw over the system. nothing new here.

    the article also stated that the landscaping firms are having no problem getting people in to apply for the jobs, athough quality people are still hard to find!

    Like any other Insurance Company must do, if they suspect fraud, they send in investigators. As this country is known for its covert capabilities, they could investigate fraudelnt claims so much quicker.
    In their theory now, then all of us are like Tim McVeigh, and the NY bomber, he was a naturalized citizen. So if a few people abuse the system, then are we ALL quilty ??

This is nothing new and has absolutely nothing to do with the problem at hand. My being out of work for 2 years has taught me a big lesson. Never assume things will not change. Well they have changed Mr. Obama (sorry – PRESIDENT Obama)So what are ya going to do about HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED. The “CHANGE” word got you into office. NOW DO SOMETHING. Approve additional TIERS extensions for unemployment, or watch all these proud Americans who voted for you go down the tubes. Stop hanging around with all your celebrity buddies and DO YOUR JOB FOR GOD’S SAKE! HEALTH CARE? I need a salary. Something I’ve had ALL MY LIFE.

    They call extending unemployment benefits “unnecessary spending” but had no problem giving huge tax breaks to companies that hire overseas.

    That’s basically the meaning of the word hypocritical.

    Not that the Dems are much better though, they should have fought for this extension months ago.

    When there are millions of people collecting unemployment, there will always be some who abuse the system. It’s unfortunate, but unavoidable.

    But you can bet that the politicians will look to ANY excuse not to continue the current Tiers, much less add another one.

    The stress is so high amongst us, the unemployed, that we feel backed into a corner. It is like beating your head against a brick wall. Trying to get across to these politicians, including our President, just how urgent this extension is to us is futile. Don’t they realize that people are loosing their utilities and homes? Not to mention self-confidence and self-esteem! Don’t they understand that a good majority of unemployed are middle aged men and women (dads and moms) who have been loyal employees for 10,20,30 years in the same business/corporation etc.? We are not talking about just a handful of unemployed people in our Country, we are talking about 15.3 million people as of April! Our Government never-ever hesitated to take taxes out of our payroll checks did they?

    I believe our present Government, each and every one of them from both parties, have put themselves so high up on that pedestal that they have lost sight of who they are working for. We, the citizens of the United States, are their employers. They don’t or won’t acknowledge us now; but come November and every election after that we can make our voices heard!!! We have to clean house in the voting booths until we are back to a Government that actually cares about the Citizens of the United States.

    Until then I am going to continue the fight to get the help that we the unemployed need. I don’t care if it means flooding every darn one of their phone, fax and email lines every single day.

    The Arabs aren’t asking for unemployment. The Mexicans aren’t asking for unemployment. Do you know why? Cuz they want are hole country and there getting it. I live in Michigan and I live right next store to a landscaping co. Ive applied there for the last two years, But 1 thing Ive notes is that there all young people working there. I’m 52 y/o. I have no insurance on my car so I cant drive it or I can and the Judge will say you know you cant drive with no insurance.so then I have to pay a $200 fine.that I cant pay.

    When you read about what some certain senators said ” Oh, just go get a job” or “When you cut their benfits off it makes them find a job”…… Their are no jobs.

    REAL NUMBERS: what the Obama admin and the mainstream media should be reporting,

    The BLS and the administration officially announced that in April:

    U.S. employers increased (non-farm) payrolls by 290,000 jobs and there are 15.3 million unemployed workers;

    The unemployment rate increased to 9.9%; and

    The U.S. economy needs to create 7.5 million new jobs in order to be fully employed.

    In fact, and in sharp contrast, American workers need to know, the administration needs to acknowledge, and Wall Street and those who report on it need to understand that:

    “Official unemployment” is only one arbitrarily defined category of unemployment BLS measures — the number of unemployed workers in all categories of unemployment increased by 499,000 and there are 30.3 million real unemployed workers (all categories);

    The all-in real unemployment rate increased to 18.9%; and

    The U.S. economy needs to create 22.2 million new jobs in order to be fully employed in real terms.

    Those numbers are increasing.

    You know…all of this reminds me of a song I absolutely loved when I was in my highschool days…and actually still love NOW!

    If anyone remembers, a band called Steppenwolf…and the song MONSTER. Go listen to it…relate it to current events…and you will see things come clearly into focus!

    This was forsight well ahead of their time (or was it?) Hmmmm kinda reminding me about the 60′s and all the strife we had back then too!

    I don’t buy it either. There have to be some extending circumstances. I sure couldn’t accept a landscaping job. I am 55 years old and not strong enough or knowledgeable in that area at all.

    I did get one call from a temp agency and it was collections. I felt it was only fair to tell her that was not something I would do well. It takes a certain personality to do that. I asked her if there were other opportunities and there were not.

    First off, if you are offered a job, and you turn it down, your benefits are immediately stopped. This story is a little fishy. I would rather be working any day to make a decent, liveable wage. Not living , or should we just say surviving off of unemployment. There are thousands upon thousands of people out of work and out of benefits that cant get work. Its a shame what this country is doing to its citizens…

If the Landscaping company (in DETROIT VERY HIGH forclosures and unemployment)was willing to PAY $12 an hour for that position that would normally pay $12 an hour I am sure that MANY would have jumped on it.     I am unemployed and have exhausted my Tier IV. I have sold almost everything I own just to survive. I am now looking at homelessness as my landlord is ready to evict me. I have 2 dogs and will need to drop them off at shelters because I cant find work and provide for them. It breaks my heart. I do not have family members that can help as they are struggling too. I feel all hope has been lost.I have suisidal thoughts daily yet some how I try to remain positive. Our Gov doesnt care yet they want us to go out and fight wars for them, pay taxes, and elect these crooks that keep them in their cushy position. People lets take our country back.

    I suspect there is a lot more abuse of the unemployment system that most suspect, in particular amongst the younger workers. My wife owns a small service company and is constantly looking for good help, but after 2 years, can not get any. 7 out of 10 interviews are with people who are unemployed, and not willing to give up $200 to $300 a week for a job making $400 a week. She had one guy that wasn’t to bad ask her if he could get paid monthly, she agreed and hired him. Four weeks later he told her that he wants to get paid under the table or he’s going to quit. Come to find out, he was on unemployment and didn’t stop his claim when he started with my wife’s company. My wife did the right thing and taxed his only and final check, so that fool can expect a visit. I had asked him how he expected to get away with it and he said that if he got caught, they would just make him pay back the amount he was over paid the weeks he worked for my wife. Wouldn’t that be a Federal offense now that the Government is covering the different Tiers? Either way, we have tried to report these people who refuse work…… no one cares, no one listens….. so it just continues. Granted, I have been unemployed before and it’s not a good feeling. I feel bad for the people who truly can not find work and want to work. But for those who fit that bill, you have a lot of people ruining the system for you…… including the system itself.     We need the TIER V now! I fear what’s comming soon. We have called and written our reps to no avail. How long can we last? The next step will be cival disobidence! If we all wnnt to government offices we could shut down other services. I don’t want it to come to that but the future is bleak. We are not hearing from our leaders or the media and we are suffering. We can only suffer so much before we revolt.
    Why has Congress or the President not created jobs or a jobs program with results. There is plenty of work that needs doing. FDR helped during the GREAT Depression who will help US?

Your government bails out bankers and Wallstreet execs using your tax dollars – but unemployment is allowed to expire? Congress wasn’t worried about the deficit when that big insurance company and Wall Street execs were giving themselves bonuses with taxpayer money! What happened to “by the people” or “for the people”? Or are the big campaign contributors the only “people” who count to congress? They are playing games and going on vacation while you are wondering how to feed your kids? 10% unemployment carries 10% of the vote! Use it!!

    I’m putting out job applications every place I can find here in northern Ohio and rarely even get a thank you, let alone an interview or call. I had one telephone interview but that’s it in months of trying. Unemployment isn’t enough money to live on and I have declared bankruptcy but still have living expenses and can’t find a job so far anyplace!

    For the last eight weeks, Initial Unemployment Claims have averaged 450,000 per week. So, over the last four weeks [the month counted], 1.8 million people were laid off. How does that fit in with the claim that 290,000 new jobs were created? The obvious answer is that it doesn’t

    The CES Birth/Death adjustment added 188,000 of those jobs. Birth/Death does not refer to people but to businesses. The BLS guesses how many new companies opened versus how many closed their doors. The BLS then uses that guess to guess again how many jobs those business created or lost.

    Another 66,000 of the new jobs came from census hiring
    Another 26,000 of the new jobs were non-census temporary
    Let’s recap:

    A guess produced 188,000 of the jobs, 66,000 were census and 26,000 were temporary.
    280,000 of the 290,000 “new jobs” were either temporary or the result of guesswork.

    Hollywood Video just laid off 12,000 workers.

    The American public is seeing the the unemployment rate is increasing and that any gains are made by people exhausting their benefits and thus falling off the unemployment count.

    Why is it that when government screws up it’s ok. But when the average Joe screws up it’s every ones fault. Government says we are learning and we’ll fix this. Yeah, at who’s expense? The taxpayer that’s who. But when average Joe makes a mistake the government comes down with force. After being in the work force for over 40 years I’m getting just a little tired of being the “lazy” one. I lost my job as a truck driver in the construction industry through no fault of my own. Here in Florida and more so in the county I live in the unemployment rate is around 12 percent. In the news the other day a new burger joint opened in Tampa needing 32 employees. More than 500 applicants showed up the first day!!! We need jobs now!!!
    Why can’t our government open some factories that make appliances instead of importing them from over seas? Retool, rebuild and make sustainable jobs for Americans not illegal aliens. BTW here in Florida the max UI benefit is $275 a week + the $25 from the Fed. Not hardly enough to live on let alone save any. Plus one has to pay income tax on the UI.

    I keep sending out resumes. Yes, I had an interview this week and was told that they received 150 resumes in 1 hour. They picked 12 and I was one of the lucky people to have an interview. All this for $11 an hour and no benefits. Okay, not good news, but half a loaf is better than none. Now, he tells me that he will be interviewing all week. I will not be holding my breath on this one. What is the story with the salaries. Can anyone survive on $8 – $10 an hour and no benefits. Have you checked on the supermarket prices?! All the computer knowledge and you are offered a salary just above the minimum wage?? I am 61 and I am considered TOO OLD or overqualified. Give me a break. Can the average person today really retire? We need the Tier V extension passed. What a horrible situation in this country. I live in Florida, and dont you think it is time to raise the amount of unemployment benefits. Let’s see, no cost of living increase for Social Security, no increase in unemployment benefits. But, they keep raising health insurance premiums, homeowners premiums, car registration costs, car insurance, need I say more?!!!

    Just returned from taking my wife to an interview at a head hunter, where they made her sit for two hours taking a test only to tell her that there was nothing they could do for her because she HASN’T BEEN EMPLOYED for over two years.

    This gang of shitbags can be found at Robert Half.

    During that time she didn’t just sit on her ass but taught herself Microsoft Expression Studio and built a killer website. But sales were skimpy, we didn’t have funds for advertising and had to shut it down recently.

    I am 53 have worked my entire life since I was 13…I was earning $47,000 at the time I lost my job (because our boss retired and closed his office). I am getting $300/wk on UI…that equates to $15,600. I have no health insurance or life insurance now. I am single. I own my home and have a mortgage, and gas, water, electric, homeowner’s insurance, home warranty..shall I continue!??! Does ANYone out there REALLY think I just want to keep drawing unemployment???? My savings are gone! I have been searching DILIGENTLY for a job for over a year…I live in TN…every week I get rejection letter after rejection letter or NO REPLY at all from prospective employers…next week my benefits will be GONE!!! Seriously? Do you really think WE don’t want work? What part of this picture are you not understanding!???! People are desperate…hope is fading…I KNOW I am not the only one who feels SO SCARED you can’t sleep…can barely hang on!!! I NEED WORK…and millions of others do to…in a nation where jobs aren’t available!!! If you have a answer…pass it on…we have tried everything we know…but DO NOT call us LAZY…DO NOT say we aren’t willing…DO NOT act like we aren’t trying!!! God help us…He is the only One Who can!!!!!!

    i agree i have been on unemployment for overa year was doing ok getting by but then my husbands hors got cut from 38 a week to 20 a week not we are barley getting by only by the grace of GOD and now im going to lose my benefits again cant find any work all hope is gone not to mention i have 2 kids to raise but we make 6 dollars to much to get help from welfare ???????????????? now if i was a crack head i would get it all…………

    I recently had an encounter that makes me view this story with skepticism. An ex-friend (she is no longer a friend)and I went out to lunch the other day, she started talking about how people on unemployment are lazy and don’t want to work. Her brother in-law owns an auto dealership and had placed a help wanted ad in the local newspaper looking for a mechanic; of which he received no response. I have been helping my unemployed neighbor write his resume and trying to help him locate work. I must have missed the ad, he would have applied had we known. I told her the plight of my neighbor and asked who her brother in-law is and where can he be contacted. I later understood why her face went pale and she stuttered, while giving me the information. When my neighbor called the dealership and spoke with the owner, his response; he had not placed an ad in over a year, in fact, hours were reduced for all service technicians so he could keep everyone and not have to terminate any of his employees. You know who you are, your are a LIAR and a PHONY. Bad enough the unemployed must continue to beg the government for help, now they must deal with their own people turning their backs on them and offering no support or compassion.

    I’ve been unemployed for 6 months. I’ve applied to many jobs, but I’m overqualified or underqualified. The industry I was in is still laying off people, so there’s a lot of competition for jobs, in addition to age bias, so I’m hoping Congress gets its act together. It’s too bad they can’t get their pay withheld until they make a decision.

    I am disappointed in your vote and the votes of fellow Democrats who have blocked extending the Emergency Unemployment Benefits. Perhaps you just don’t realize the stress that is put upon the unemployed in this country. People who have worked hard, educated themselves, and now through no fault of their own, find themselves without hope in this … See Moreeconomy. Apparently, the Senate members who continue to block this aid every time an extension vote is required feel they are making some valuable point about fiscal responsibility feel the need to use the unemployed as an example of how to be responsible government officials. Well, it is not only absurd it is immoral. The continued exploitation of the unemployed is infuriating. What you may not have considered is that many of the unemployed have voted in every election in which they have been eligible. Next time we all go vote….vote independent…
    Why not make the people who committed the crimes which brought about the loss of 8 million jobs to pay for this?
    WE ARE NOT LAZY! WE NEED JOBS TO LOOK FOR! THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH JOBS TO COVER ALL WHO LOST THEM.
    Do you really believe that anyone would rather live on $300 a week instead of a real job with better pay and benefits?
    WE PAID INTO THIS SYSTEM FOR 30, 40, 50 YEARS, HOW DARE YOU WIND DOWN OUR INSURANCE BENEFITS? IT IS NOT WELFARE!
    THIS IS SO WRONG:
    “Rep. John Linder (R-Ga.) said last Thursday, for instance, that extended unemployment benefits are “too much of an allure” for people to look for work. Even Senate Democrats who voted in favor of the bill, such as Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), are starting to look toward winding down the programs.”
    Perhaps we really have no power, it is obvious that our concerns are not being addressed by our elected officials.
    WE ARE SCREWED!!!!!!!!! I GUESS WE ARE ALL “SMALL PEOPLE” TO THEM TOO!!!!

    Nominate fellow unemployed people for positions in government. One of the requirement for election should be that you are unemployed. It would be amusing to replace all the fat cats in Washington with formerly unemployed constituents (who have been maligned and abused by these “representatives”) I don’t think any of them will deserve unemployment benefits from their former supporters, except, unfortunately, a fat retirement package, courtesy of the American taxpayer. That is the downside.
