Is The Unemployment Extension Shaping The Mid Term Elections
By Janet Peterson on July 19, 2010, 5:33 am Posted in Finance NewsRepublican leaders are now saying, after the filibuster and before the swearing in of Mr. Goodwin, that they have been for the extension all along. Their claim is that they couldn’t agree to not offset it during the current “spending spree” the Democrats are on. As if this isn’t bad enough, some Republican candidates are making statements about the extension and the jobless situation that Democrats are exploiting to the best of their abilities.
Disconnected From The Average American
Using a lack of antipathy towards the unemployment extension, and hammering on the deficit seems to be the way of some candidates. Sharon Angle, a Repub Senate candidate in Nevada said “we have put in so much entitlement into our government that we really have spoiled our citizenry and said you don’t want the jobs that are available.” Another candidate, in Kentucky said “Nobody likes that, but it may be one of the tough love things that has to happen.” He was talking about accepting a lower paying job than the previous one.
Benefiting From This Crassness
Democrats are taking these cruel statements, and others, and using their own words against their opponents. Senator Reid, running against Angle, is painting her as too extreme, and she is showing herself to be heartless on the issue. In the Kentucky race, the competition, Jack Conway, made this statement, “He’s fine with feeding at the federal trough himself, he just doesn’t want others, whether they be unemployed or the farmers whose subsidies he wants to end, feeding by his side.”
Anti-incumbent Attitude
Incumbent candidates from both sides are gearing up for the fight of their lives. Analysts are saying that the general mood of the voting public is anti-incumbent, and the people are looking for fresh faces to lead this country. Democrats haven’t announced their strategies yet…maybe they’re letting the Republicans sink their own ship. They are doing a good job of it.

All this unemployment stuff aside, my personal choices have been funny.
I voted for Dubyah in 2000, I was a republican.
After watching the 3 stooges, (Dubyah, Cheyney and Rumsfeld) basically ignore the constitution and start the sinking of our ship, I did not vote for him in 2004, it was then I realized we needed a change.
Again, watching the republicans trying their hardest to make this country fail, only to make themselves somehow look better, how can anyone actually vote them back in?
And I ask this, when we as a country voted Dubyah in for a second term. We as a whole are just plain idiots.
We deserve what we get, we are stupid enough to keep the blinders on.
Both parties suck, plain and simple, I just go with the lesser of the two evils.
The true terrorists are in DC, our own government officials. Each and every one of them!!!!!
This should be about the unemployed and how to help us and should not be about who is gonna win or who is better. Do that in your campaign speeches. Stop using us as a pawn in your games. Put more energy into figuring out how to help the long term unemployed. that is more important now than this game you are playing with our lives.
GOP you have shown the working people of america your TRUE COLORS!!!!!! Thank you Sharon Angle For letting the country see that you are a sorry heartless bitch!!!!! Before you got elected most politicans hide that until they get elected
Sharon Angle is a heartless person but unfortunately Reid is not really a nice guy even he tries to pass the the extension bill. Reid did not try hard enough and he did not want to use stimulus money at all. Using 17 billions (to pay for 1/2 the cost) from stimulus money is just a small dent in the fund. Reid is also incumbent so it may be hurt him. I wish him win since he got a D average from me and Sharon deserve a grade below F.
I was a card carrying Republican for many years. Now that the current Congressional Republicans (Selfish Right Wingers)have basically and boldly told the American citizens that have lost their employment, their homes and yes sadly, some their lives, mean nothing to them as a party or as individuals, I have flushed the card down the commode and I surely hope we as a nation can flush their political careers come November. We as Americans have lost many of our rights already, but we can still vote. The power of the people needs to heard in November at the ballot box. I must admit I am from the generation that protested publicly about life changing and national issues such as race discrimination and war. Where are the activists? I truly wish that John Lennon were still here with us or other famous people ready to put it on the line for the right thing and not the more lucrative thing all the time. Take YOUR COUNTRY BACK!!! WAKE UP AND VOTE THESE SELFISH ASS*****’S OUT!!!
Does anyone know what the GOP is about?? They say no to just about everything, they say the weirdest things and they don’t even have a better idea when they say no. I truly think they are a bunch of racist bastards that hate the fact that Obama is in office. They want to make him look bad by not helping to move this country forward, only the GOP is sooooo stupid they don’t relize that this makes them look bad. They look and sound like a party that doesn’t know what they are all about and what their plans are to help move the country forward. Sharon Angle, Michelle Bachman, John Ive gotta Boehner are all just plain nuts!!! But the people that actually vote for these cretins are just as nuts!!!
I think Republicans think by making the Obama administration look like failures…it makes a person like Palin a sure thing in the next Presidential Elections. While attempting to ruin this country, they should be attempting to groom somebody who has freakin chance of winning. Washington’s Republican are clueless…not mention to they can’t seem to remember the last 10 years.
Republicans need to step up and pass the damn unemployment extension bill. What do the republicans stand for ? I’m embarrassed to admit I’m a republican. If they don’t sign the unemployment extension, I’m switching over to the Democratic ticket along with alot more people !!!
My dad, rest his soul, was for republicans. I think if he were alive today, and saw how they are acting about the unemployment extension bill, he would change his mind. I have been unemployed for a long time, and although I have put my application in time and time again, I haven’t had any luck. I am 57 years old, and that doesn’t help either. I just pray that they sign the bill!
My gas has been shut-off for the past 3 weeks and my kids have been bathing in cold water. Have you ever had a cold shower? Your body tenses up and your bones shiver. Trust me….my bones will remain cold for the 2010 midterm election in November.
I have encouraged my friends and family to vote against the Republicans in both the House and Senate come November. Hell no do I want more cold showers.
The republican’s and Ben Nelson (except for Olympia Snowe & Susan Collins) have shown no sympathy for the unemployed. In fact, they accused us of being lazy, drug addicts and Hobos.
If it was true the Republicans really wanted to help the unemployed, why would they also say that the Unemployment Extensions are a disincentive for the unemployed to look for work? Why give excuses about the deficit when the UI benefits are considered an emergency spending? Why? Because their intentions are to stall America’s recovery from the recession in hopes to win the November Election. Imagine what will happen to the American citizens if the Republicans were to win the November mid-term election?
The Obama Administration wants change for the people but the GOP’s keep filibustering and only represent the wealthy. Don’t buy into the fact that the Republicans also want the UI Extension to pass by using stimulus funds. The stimulus funds are to help our States with their budget deficits which will help to save City & State jobs and the GOP’s know it.
Sharron Angle had previously argued that the government should cut unemployment extension benefits to get the jobless back to work. In one interview she said “What has happened is the system of entitlement has caused us to have a spoilage with our ability to go out and get a job. … There are some jobs out there that are available. Because they have to enter at a lower grade and they cannot keep their unemployment, they have to make a choice now.”
My answer to Sharron Angle would be “facts.” She sounds exactly the same as any Republicans and Ben Nelson except for Olympia Snowe & Susan Collins. We see it all too often where politicians speak through “power” instead of speaking with true facts.
Harry Reid on the other hand, is truly a Senate Leader who is a fighter not only for the Nevadans but for all people of our Nation. Now this is true fact.
America is in a crisis from the recession. Truthfully, there aren’t enough jobs out there when compared to the number of people applying for the same job. There are other obstacles out there for the unemployed in today’s job market. One in particular is the age group.
“Angle is also known for her other radical views, like her interest in phasing out Social Security and Medicare, to doing away with federal agencies such as the Education Department to cut spending and developing Yucca Mountain into a nuclear reprocessing facility.”
Here we go again about “power” vs. the struggling American Citizens.
I lost my unemployment in June. I’m a single mother. I have supported my three kids most of their lives by myself. I have worked since I was 15 years old and now I’m 41 years old and do not have a job. I have refused no job offers…. in fact, I was a paralegal but have been putting applications in at Burger King… anything is better than nothing. There are at least 100 people applying for the same jobs around where I live… several factories have closed and things are really bad. I actually had to go apply for food stamps last week because my kids had no food on the table. I’ve never been on welfare of any sort and if they had approved this extension, I would not have had to apply for food stamps. I’m so depressed and thinking about moving away to find a job but I can’t move with no money. I am stuck and almost homeless with three kids. I don’t really have much of a family to help me and haven’t ever asked anyone for anything until now. PLEASE pass this extension.
Did anyone listen to Mitch Mcconnell in an interview with CNN’S Candey Crawley Sunday? What a piece of work this guy is.He talks as if the Republicans are the savior of the nation. He must think that most of us are really stupid. This guy is so pathetic and doing lots of harm to the working class. He is a prime example of how lousy the Republicans truly are.
Then there is Ben Nelson(Nebraska)another dandy. He is even worse then Mcconnell.Atleast he acts and talks the true Republican line.Nelson is as phony as that tacky toupee he wears and so arrogant too.He is a real turncoat Democrat that has been helping the Republicans obstruct and not being held accountable by the Democrats. This guy is a real weasle!
Just a fun fact for all of us rich lazy unemployed druggies. I was just watching C-Span and during a news break it was reported that Hilary Clinton while in Pakistan gave a speech in which she emphasized that our government had already approved over 7.5 Billion dollars that will be given to them for infrastructure. WAKE UP!!!!! This is just one of the many thousands of gifts our budget minded Congress has given to special interests and foreign countries while American citizens lose everything they ever worked for in this country. Makes you wanna wave the flag.. doesn’t it?
Look everyone,
The Republicans want this extension passed just as fast as everyone else. They want it taken out of the UNSPENT STIMULUS FUNDS.
The Democrats are refusing! There is about 300 BILLION left in the stimulus fund. THE REAL STORY IS WHY WON’T THE DEMOCRATS ALLOW THE FUNDING TO COME FROM THE UNSPENT STIMULUS!!! PUT PRESSURE ON THE DEMS TO DO THIS. IT IS A WIN / WIN SITUATION. THE UNEMPLOYED GET AN EXTENSION AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT HAVE TO PUT MORE ON ITS CREDIT CARD.
I HAVE BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS, WORKED ALL OF LAST YEAR AND WAS OUT ABOUT 8 MONTHS IN 2008. I KNOW PAIN AND SUFFERING AND YET I SEE A SNAKE IN THE GRASS TRYING TO PULL A FAST ONE – DEMOCRATS.
First of all the stimulus funds are not just a slush fund setting around. It is all earmarked and the Republicans would love to sabotage it for their own political gain. They(Republicans)are only concerned about the deficent on the back of the working class. However, the Bush tax cuts renewal will add close to 7 billion dollars to the deficent and they have no problem with that even now!
Excuse me,the Bush tax cuts would add close to 700 BILLION DOLLARS to the Deficent!
and the republicans have never allowed the unemployment to lapse under the Bush Administration. They seek failure under the Obama Administration no matter the cost. In this case, the cost of the struggling middle class citizens.
You know you are a Republic. . .
When you lost the vote!
The vote tomorrow is certainly not a done deal. Keep writing your representatives, and anyone who has previously voted “nay” on this vote and request that they stand for the American people, not political gamesmanship.
Also, regardless of whether this is passed or not, I would suggest that everyone research and know how your representatives voted on this issue, regardless of their political affiliation, and vote them out of office when you have the opportunity. If you find that a specific political party is standing in the way, and your representative is not up for re-election, then my suggestion (only) would be to research the alternative party choices and vote for the best among them.
The GOP has not been worried about the deficit up until now. They have funded two wars, they have voted increases in their own salaries, they continue to wage war for the wealthiest people in this country by way of tax cuts for them. The only real thing they are standing firm on is not passing the unemployment extension as it regards deficit spending without being able to fund it.
And yes, I think, from the standpoint of the unemployed, the mid-term elections will be affected by the failure of the GOP to have any understanding or empathy for the huge numbers of Americans who are now suffering through no fault of their own. They are out of touch with the ordinary man because they have always been primarily geared to protect the wealthy and the privileged.
The unemployment extension is only a sympton of a much bigger problem. Our incredibly corrupt government. We need to unite and vote incumbents out this year and every year until we have people in office who will look out for their fellow americans and not just their wealthy buddies and corporate sponsers. And we need to keep voting out anyone who doesn’t. But we can start with this November and show them we mean business. That we will no longer keep our heads in the sand while they ruin our once great nation and turn it into a third world socialist country. The fight is on!!!!
The Democrats have the 60 votes and Republicans will lose this one badly… and I mean badly. No matter what the GOP’s excuse was for voting against extending UI benefits, it’s impossible to ignore the despicable Welfare Queen part II propaganda they’ve been spewing. Especially when there are 6 job seekers for every opening.
I will be voting straight Dem in Nov. If I lived in Nebraska though, I’d probably vote for the Republican running against Ben Nelson.
Yeah, I don’t know how Nelson can even call himself a Democrat…he’s despicable!
people,, I know many of you are hurting.. But when this round of money is gone..Then what ?? Go try to borrow more..?? China has pulled the strings tighter,we cannot keep this up..Please stop looking at lets blame the democrats, lets blame the republicans..Try to find some kind of work..anything that will feed your kids.. Whats wrong with americans today ? People have gotten so used to freebies and gvmt give aways they cannot do anything on their own..Pay attntion people,,you are one step away from China stepping in and claiming part of this country because we cannot pay our debt,,Don’t you ever read anything..PLEASE try to do something to help yourselves..As an old timer I can tell you thats what we used to do..I HAVE NEVER DRAWN UNEMPLOYMENT IN MY LIFE NOR RECEIVED WELFARE..WE MADE IT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER,,
