Immigration Reform: Reid Pushes DREAM Act Into Focus
By Victor Hatley on September 19, 2010, 11:25 am Posted in Finance NewsThe controversy surrounding immigration reform and the DREAM Act has been raging through the U.S. for months now, and as if to push the President into following up on a few campaign promises, Senator Reid has attached the DREAM Act to a bill that the Republican “naysayers” will find hard to vote “nay” on…the defense appropriations bill that is to be voted on next week. While this isn’t the entirety of reform that Americans would like to see, it is a step in the right direction.
The DREAM Act
The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act was devised to provide a way for minors of undocumented workers to gain citizenship, education, and add value to a class of people who are presently considered a drain on our economy. With the President promising reform, and Senator Menendez offering aid in the form of legislation at the beginning of the new year, Mr. Reid must feel the need for the Hispanic vote come November, and this could bring in many.
Politically Motivated
Some are saying that the move could be solely politically motivated. These people are saying that the Senator attached the measure to a bill that the Republican base in Congress can’t refuse. The military appropriations bill is a sure fire way to do just that, and with one the highest illegal populations in the U.S., the Nevada Democrat may gain a few votes.
Opposition Mounting Up
With all the controversy fired up, it’s an easy bet that the Tea Part would get into the act. They sent out an e-mail on Thursday requesting that all opposition to the DREAM Act get their horses moving. Add into this the public’s discontent in the way the President is handling the immigration reform issue, polls show 60% disapprove of it, the Senator may have a bad day getting this through the Senate. Polls are also reflecting that the American public are wanting to do away with the birthright citizenship law that very few countries still subscribe to.

This fact sheet provides an overview of the results from a public opinion survey analyzing support for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act), federal legislation that would provide undocumented students brought to the United States as children with the opportunity to earn permanent legal status upon meeting certain requirements.
According to the survey results, 70% of Americans favor the DREAM Act, a notable increase in support compared to a similar 2004 poll that placed public support at 58%.
The telephone survey was commissioned by First Focus and conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, using a national probability sample of 1,008 adults comprising 506 men and 502 women. The survey was completed during the period of June 10-13, 2010. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 3%.
GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT BEFORE YOU POST SOMETHING.
The poll results in this article are outdated.
More recent results show the contrary.
If there are new polls please post them, these are from June, 2010 I don’t see them changing that dramatically in a matter of a few months.
Actually the Rasmussen Report stating that “A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that only 22% of voters support the proposal introduced by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). The Dream Act would have given legal status to children of illegal aliens who complete two years of college or military service. That low level of support is very similar to support for the “comprehensive” reform measure that failed in June.
Fifty-nine percent (59%) of all voters oppose the Dream Act concept. Republicans oppose it by a 5-to-1 margin and unaffiliateds are opposed by a 3-to-1 margin. Democrats are a bit more evenly divided—49% opposed and 31% in favor—but Nancy Pelosi’s party certainly doesn’t provide a base of support for the Dream Act.”
THIS REPORT IS FROM 2007, RECENT POLLS SHOW AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF AMERICANS, 70% TO BE IN FAVOR OF THE DREAM ACT IN ITS CURRENT FORM. LIKE I SAID BEFORE CHECK YOUR FACTS BEFORE POSTING INFORMATION AS THE TRUTH.
Agreed. This isn’t such a bad idea, it’s not gonna hurt us in a any way, rather it will create a more skilled workforce and make professionals from youth who without this legislation would be left uneducated and inclined to commit crime.
Exactly. If so many Americans are angry about paying taxes for illegals that go to school from K-12 why not give the immigrants a chance to pay taxes of their own. They must go to college or the military and if they do go to college they must pay for it themselves or get student loans which they must pay back. Therefore if a citizen earned a 3.5 GPA and someone attending college through the Dream Act earned a 4.0, only the citizen could get grants such as the Pell Grant because students going to college under the Dream Act are NOT able to get grants or scholarships. Why should these children have to pay for crimes that their parents committed? Do we charge children for murders their parents committed? Or traffic tickets?
We have become the most confused people on earth…
We cannot pass the dream act. It will only encourage illegals to come with their children to get a free education.
We cannot afford to give these who came to steal from us taxpayer supported loans.
The truly exceptional are being granted college money – like Mr Balderas at Harvard. The Hispanic and Christian groups are also providing a great deal of college funding
Really Taxpaper..Do you realize that out of the 11% of undocumented worker, 8% pay taxes! They pay for something they can never have and yet you believe they are stealing from “us taxpayers”. You are so clueless to what is really going on. You probably just follow whatever the TV spews out. I feel sorry for your children and the messages you are passing on to them. you fuckin elitist
we need immigration reform sooner than later it will come a long way in helping america.
The DREAM act gives illegals US college seats at the expense of American kids, and also gives them access to a plethora of student loans, reduced tuition, and other financial aid, again at the expense of US college students.
It also allows them to bring in huge numbers of their largely uneducated and unskilled relatives under generous US “family reunification” policies. This will further increase the unemployment rate. And of course, it will encourage more to come, once the word gets out that the gringos are handing out millions of subsidized college educations and free US citizenship papers.
They’ve already gotten a K-12 “free” education at the expense of US taxpayers, who are forced to fund their education for “free” because of the activist Supreme Court ruling known as Plyler vs. Doe (taxation without representation). They should be grateful for the free education they’ve already gotten and quit demanding more freebies from already hard-pressed American taxpayers.
With our nation bankrupt and our economy the way it is, Americans are not in any mood to hand out any more freebies to foreign lawbreakers. We have no money for our own elderly, children, students, veterans and poor, let alone for greedy foreign lawbreakers who just can’t stop asking for MORE MORE MORE from us.
Mexico needs to step up to the plate and take care of its own citizens — the gringo gravy train has run out of fuel.
If you don’t want them in our schools, or even to breathe American air then you should also submit to this fact: If America had a draft today these undocumented men, and women should not be drafted. They would have the right not to even be included. We cannot support the bias by eating the foods they harvest everyday in our fields, make our beds; take care of our kids, mow our lawns; build our houses and buildings, pack out meats; wash our dishes and ship our products. We support the bias but sit at our computers and complain? We should be complaining about the National debt and China buying it up, along with all the products we produce and then pay them for. When last did you look at a piece of tech you have in your home that wasn’t build in China? They are doing the sleeping, building up their military and waiting to take control. That’s what we need to worry about, not 11 million people wanting a better life and wanting to give their lives on the battle fields to protect America. America’s foundation is freedom, not for some but for all. We lose sight of that her very foundation is compromised. We are better than this, or are we?
If a majority supported the Dream Act, there wouldn’t be a problem with enactment and any opposition would eventually be voted out of office. The fact this Administration is attaching it to a Defense appropriations bill and to ram down the majority’s throats like Healthcare demonstrates conclusively the lack of public support regardless of any biased opinion poll indicating otherwise.
GO AHEAD DEPORT THOSE DIRTY EVEN SCUM RATS. THEN CALL YOURSELVES AMERICANS AND DONATE MONEY TO CHARITY CAUSES. THAT’S THE TWO OPTIONS DEPORT OR DO SOMETHING TO GET THEM RIGHT. NOTHING ELSE.

The CIR DREAM ACT has to be passed this year itself. If the republicans dont support it the President could meke it an administrative order.
Let me get this straight. Because I chose the straight and narrow path and have been paying for my college loan for the past 15 years and the end is no where in sight, they’ll be rewarding illegal aliens free education?
If that’s the case, Americans should stop paying for their school loans too.
