A debt consolidation plan is used by many debtors to consolidate their debts and lower their monthly payments. One of the largest concerns that people have with debt consolidation plans is that they are stuck with a payment for a very long period of time. Luckily, many debt consolidation plans allow a debtor to make debt consolidation payments more frequently. While you need to ensure that pre-payment is allowed under your plan, there are many benefits of making extra debt consolidation payments.

Contact Your Provider

Prior to making extra debt consolidation loan payments, you should contact your debt consolidation loan provider. While many do not, some providers may charge excess fees for making extra payments or charge pre-payment penalties for those who pay off their loan early. If there are various fees associated with making extra payments, then making extra payment may not make financial sense.

Pay Less Interest

The first benefit of making extra debt consolidation payments is that you will pay less money in interest over the life of the loan. Each month, as you pay down your debt consolidation loan principal, a larger portion of your payment goes to paying down principal and less of your payment goes towards interest. If you make more payments, you will pay down the principal more quickly and therefore pay less in interest.

Improve Your Credit

Another reason why making extra debt consolidation payments is an excellent idea is because it will improve your credit quicker. By making payments more frequently you will be able to pay down your outstanding debt owed more quickly. This in turn will improve your score. Also, by making payments more frequently, you are drastically decreasing the chances that you will be late on any payments.
