Postal Service Plan: 58% Of Americans Favor No Saturday Service

Those of you who enjoy going to your mailbox on Saturdays, to see what exciting pieces of mail await you, well, you will probably need to adjust to not seeing that mail one day soon. It looks like Saturday mail delivery is going to be eliminated.

John E. Potter Visits Congress To Make Request

John E. Potter, the Postmaster General of the United States, has officially asked Congress to rid the sixth day from service. Potter attributes part of the Saturday issue is due to e-mail. This, he says, is causing people to use the computer letter more than the hand-written letter. It is certain your dog will miss seeing the carrier arrive every Saturday. It is also certain that some senior citizens, having this high-point of their day to look forward to, will be sad to see the service cut.

Post Office Set To Lose A Lot Of Money This Year

Potter’s department has reported the postal service will lose $7 billion dollars during this fiscal year. It is reported that Americans have mailed 20 billion fewer items compared to last year. We are also starting to say good bye to the blue mail collection boxes. People have not been using them as much lately. So far, to date, 200,000 have been taken off the street corners.

Mail Delivery Was Discontinued One Saturday Before In The U.S.

One Saturday, in 1957, Arthur E. Summerfield, who was the Postmaster General, decided to do away with Saturday mail. He declared this was needed for “budgetary prudence.” On April 13, of that year, there was no Saturday delivery. There was such an outcry that President Dwight D. Eisenhower immediately signed a bill awarding the postal service additional funding. Will people react the same way today, if their Saturday service is eliminated? Time will tell.

58% doesn’t sound like an overwhelming majority to me. With a population of 310 million, that means there’s something in the neighborhood of 140 million people who are not all-right with eliminating Saturday delivery.

Mail delivery is one of our rights in the Constitution. I want Saturday delivery.
