Obama White House: ALCU In An Uproar Over Keeping Guantamano Open
By Janet Peterson on March 10, 2010, 6:00 am Posted in Economy NewsWhat comes to mind when you hear the name Guantanamo Bay? To many, you think of torture, water boarding, and the mistreatment of detainees by soldiers and others guarding them. The ACLU is in an uproar over keeping Guantanamo Bay prison open. President Obama had promised to close the controversial prison and even signed an executive order stating that it would be closed. However, there is an issue on whether or not closing the prison is a threat to national security.
ACLU Wants Guantanamo Bay Closed
The ACLU is the American Civil Liberties Union; they are an organization that wants to protect the liberties and rights of people in the United States. Many of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay have been in prison for years and have not had their trials yet. Some of these men have even denied they are associated with terrorist organizations and have not been allowed to speak to their families or friends. The ACLU believes that allowing these prisoners to be transferred to maximum security prisons in the US and being given trials in US civilian courts is the right thing to do. They believe that you cannot hold people for years on end without formally charging them or bringing them into court and letting them prove their innocence. In the United States, people are given the right to a trial by jury. The detainees are in Guantanamo Bay so they have been denied this even though no real proof has been presented in court to prove that they are actually a threat to the United States or other countries.
To The World Guantanamo Bay Is A Symbol Of Torture
To many people in the world, the prison in Cuba is a sign of what is wrong with the world. Waterboarding and torture are illegal according to the Geneva Convention. Many countries feel that by closing the prison the world can close the chapter on this type of rationalization for the torture that occurred during the Bush Administration. Terrorist groups now use pictures of this prison to get youth to join their movement. Some have stated the prison prevents terrorists from committing terrorism in the US while others claim that it incites terrorism and makes the problem much worse.
