Obama Sends Strong Message To Troops & Terrorists In Afghanistan

In a surprise and unannounced visit to Afghanistan today (March 28, 2010), President Obama addressed U.S. troops in the region and also met with President Hamid Karzai in Kabul to discuss the progress being made in the war on terrorists. This is the first time President Obama has visited the war-torn country during his presidency.

Remarks From President Obama To U.S. Troops

According to a Bloomberg wire report today, President Obama spoke to group of soldiers and personnel from the Marines the Air Force at Bagram airfield. The president’s words appeared to be part of an effort to boost troop morale. Bloomberg quotes President Obama as saying, ““If I thought for a minute that America’s vital interests were not served I would order you home right away.” He also reportedly remarked that winning the battle in Afghanistan is essential to United States security. Afghanistan remains a known hide-out for members of various radical terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda.

President Obama’s Meeting With President Karzai

Although the meeting between President Obama, President Karzai and members of both leader’s staffs was closed, the Washington Post reported that President Obama, in an appearance with President Karzai, told memebers of the press that while he is “encouraged by the progress that’s been made” in Afghanistan, he wants to see more accountability from Afghanistan officials. In particular, President Obama is concerned about corruption in the Afghan government, and drug trafficking in the region that funds terrorist groups.

 

The U.S. Plan On Afghanistan And The Region

President Obama has been committed to shifting troops and resources from Iraq to Afghanistan. He authorized the deployment of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in December 2009. Those troops are still being deployed. Eventually, 100,000 will be in Afghanistan. President Obama is also attempting to forge stronger ties with Pakistan in the war against terrorists.
