Toyota (NYSE:T) sells more cars in America than any other foreign car manufacturer. The company earned a reputation for safety and reliability. The recent problems with Toyota have tarnished the safety reputation of the company. 2.3 million Toyota vehicles were recalled because of a problem that could cause the accelerator to become stuck.

Irv Miller Warned Toyota To Come Clean

Toyota executive Irv Miller warned the company about keeping the known safety problems with the accelerators on many Toyota cars. The foreign car company issued the recall a few days after the executive said that not revealing potential problems did a disservice to customers.

Toyota issued an earlier recall for a similar issue with the accelerators in 2009. In both case, the gas pedal became stuck and the driver could not control the speed of the vehicle. News reports about out of control Toyotas further heightened public awareness of the problem. Local Toyota dealerships were inundated with accelerator repair requests for several weeks after the automaker issued one of the largest car recalls in U.S. History.

Company Knew Of Problems With The Cars

The e-mails show a pattern of ignoring potential safety problems with their cars. Toyota knew of potential problems but took no action to correct them. Other Toyota executives showed a lack of concern over the potential problems, despite warnings from several high-ranking company officials.

When the company did issue the recall, Toyota dealers around the country worked quickly to fix the problem and the president of the company issued several public apologies. Toyota may have to work to recover the trust of the public, but it handled the recall of several million cars well.
