Spirit Airlines Carry-On Fees Will Set Trend For Copy Cat Airlines

It used to be that checked bags were part of your airfare. But, with passengers bringing on more and more bags, airlines decided to start charging. Things might work out so that FedEx will soon have more business from people sending their packages instead of carrying them on board. Not only will passengers with Spirit Airlines have to pay $25 for a checked bag, but the airlines has made a decision to add an additional charge to those already being charged for luggage. The reasoning is that airlines make a lot of money from checked bags which allows them to offer really cheap fares.

Spirit Airlines New Charge For Carry On Bag

Spirit Airlines now plans to charge $45 for carry on bags being stashed in the overhead compartment. The new charge will begin on August 1, 2010. Spirit Air Lines has been using charging for bags at airports in St. Petersburg/Clearwater International long before major airlines took up the lucrative money maker to help defray the costs of their really cheap fares. Actually, Spirit will still let passengers bring one item like a purse, laptop or backpack without charge. But, any bag that can’t fit in front of the passenger will be charged.

Will The New Charge For Carry Ons Catch On

According to some expert online travel agents, the major airlines will wait before adopting the new charge for carry on bags since most of their business comes from business people who make it a regular habit of carrying on laptops and suitbags. Many passengers have become shrewd in trying to avoid fees that airlines charge to make up for their low air fares.

Facts are that luggage fees have made the airlines up to $2 million in 2009. These fees allow airlines like Spirit to advertise cheap air fares.
